Review by Greg Stafford

Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos 4, 5 & 6 – A Baroque Blast from the Past (1992) Let’s cut to the chase: Johann Sebastian Bach knew how to throw a musical party. And with Brandenburg Concertos 4, 5 & 6, performed by The Brandenburg Consort under Roy Goodman’s baton-waving genius, you’re in for a treat that’ll make your ears perk up like a cat spotting a laser pointer. Released in 1992 on Hyperion Records, this UK gem is pure Baroque gold—no chintzy plastic here, just polished notes and serious vibes. First off, let’s talk about Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D Major, BWV 1050. If this track doesn’t get your brain fizzing, you might need to check if you’ve still got a pulse. The harpsichord solo? Absolute fire. Alastair Ross on keys gives it everything he’s got—it’s flashy, it’s bold, and honestly, it feels like someone handed him an espresso shot before recording. You can practically hear Bach smirking from beyond the grave as Roy Goodman leads the ensemble through this whirlwind of virtuosity. This isn’t just music; it’s a high-speed chase scene where everyone wins. Then there’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G Major, BWV 1049, which opens with an Allegro so sprightly it could double as background music for squirrels playing tag. Rachel Brown on flute steals the show here—her playing is light, nimble, and utterly charming. Paired with Peter Holtslag’s recorder work, they weave melodies so intricate you’d think spiders were jealous. By the time the Presto kicks in, you’ll feel like you’ve been strapped to a runaway horse-drawn carriage—but hey, at least the view’s great, right? The production quality deserves props too. Antony Howell’s engineering ensures every note pops without sounding overproduced, while Terry Shannon’s design wraps the whole thing in a package classy enough to impress even your snootiest vinyl-collecting friend. Oh, and those liner notes by Roy Goodman himself? They’re worth reading—not just because they’re informative but also because they remind you that nerds who love history can be surprisingly cool. What makes this album stick in my mind isn’t just its technical brilliance—it’s the sheer joy bubbling beneath the surface. Sure, classical music sometimes gets a rep for being stiff-upper-lip territory, but not here. These concertos are alive, brimming with personality and wit. Listening to them feels less like attending a formal gala and more like crashing a lively dinner party where everyone’s having way too much fun. So, would I recommend this record? Absolutely. Whether you're a seasoned Bach fan or a newbie dipping your toes into the Baroque pool, these performances will leave you grinning. Just don’t blame me if you start air-conducting in public—it’s contagious. Final thought: If Bach had Instagram, his profile bio would probably read “Harpsichord enthusiast | Fugue fanatic | Dad jokes included.” And honestly? That’s why we love him.

About Bach The Brandenburg Consort, Roy Goodman

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany. A prolific German composer and organist, his sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra and solo instruments drew together the strands of the baroque genre and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he introduced no new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, a control of harmonic and motivic organisation from the smallest to the largest scales, and the adaptation of rhythms and textures from abroad, particularly Italy and France. Many people consider him to be the greatest Baroque composer, and one of the greatest composers of all time. Revered for their intellectual depth, technical command and artistic beauty, J.S. Bach's works include the Brandenburg concertos, the keyboard suites and partitas, the Mass in B Minor, the St. Matthew Passion, The Musical Offering, The Art of Fugue and a large number of cantatas, of which about 220 survive. He died on July 28, 1750. Some of his sons also became composers - , , and .
