Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs - Live At Sunbury

Review by Shelly Geans-Campbell

Live At Sunbury by Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs – A Raw Aussie Rock Gem If you’re into rock music with that raw, live energy, Live At Sunbury by Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs is one heck of an album to sink your teeth into. Released under Ultimate Records and recorded in Australia (where else?), this sucker captures the band at their peak during the legendary Sunbury Festival. With Gil "Rats" Mathews and John French on engineering duties, they nailed the vibe—gritty, loud, and unapologetically real. Now, let’s talk tracks. There are eight tunes here, but two really stuck with me: “Most People I Know Think That I’m Crazy” and “Rock Me Baby.” “Most People I Know…” hits hard right outta the gate. It’s got this swaggering rhythm that feels like a punchy conversation over beers. The lyrics? Relatable as hell. Who hasn’t felt like everyone thinks you’re nuts at some point? Thorpe’s voice carries this mix of defiance and vulnerability—it’s like he’s saying, “Yeah, I’m wild, but so what?” You can practically hear the crowd going nuts in the background. This track isn’t just memorable; it’s the kind of song that makes you wanna grab a mic and belt it out yourself. Then there’s “Rock Me Baby,” which kicks off the setlist with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. It’s straight-up bluesy rock ‘n’ roll goodness, packed with killer riffs and Thorpe’s powerhouse vocals. What gets me every time is how tight the band sounds—they lock in like they’ve been playing together for decades. And honestly, when Thorpe screams those high notes, it gives me goosebumps. Like, dude wasn’t holding back AT ALL. If this doesn’t get your blood pumping, check your pulse. The rest of the album keeps the momentum going too. Tracks like “Jump Back” and “CC Rider” keep things rowdy, while slower numbers like “Mumma” show off the band’s softer side without losing their edge. Even covers like “Be Bop A Lula” feel fresh because of how much personality they throw into them. But here’s the thing about Live At Sunbury: it’s not perfect. Some bits sound messy, and yeah, you can tell it was recorded live. But that’s exactly why it works. It’s authentic. No studio tricks, no autotune—just a bunch of Aussies shredding their hearts out in front of a hyped-up festival crowd. And honestly, listening to this album feels like stepping back in time. It reminds me of sweaty gigs where the floor shakes from jumping around and singing till your throat hurts. Weirdly enough, though, it also made me think about how different live music is now compared to back then. These days, everything’s so polished and planned out. Maybe we need more chaos like this. So yeah, if you dig rock that feels alive, pick up Live At Sunbury. Just don’t blame me if your neighbors start complaining about the noise.

MEMORIES - Sunbury, 3 years in a row for me. I loved how Billie unashamedly brought back classics and made them his own, and certainly added some ooomph.

I'm on page# 284 of 'Jimmy Barnes Working Class Boy' book (Chrissie prezzie from Santa - my wife 2016) and I'll write it straight from the page; "Now, the reason I wanted to go (to the Sunbury Rock Festival 1972) was to see Billy Thorpe. He was my hero. He played louder and faster than anyone else in the country". I guess that's pretty high praise from Barnesy. If you want more I'm afraid you are going to have to get it out at your local library. You won't be disappointed. I've returned to write a little more though not from Barnsey's book. Billy Thorpe And The Aztecs were the inaugural 'Pub Rock' band that pioneered the Australian rock and rock style 'Pub Rock in the early '70s! Now that's very cool. Over here in New Zealand there was definitely a similar style in the '70s as well. Gotta say though this Aussie artist Billy Thorpe And The Aztecs were superb and I just so love this live album taken from the 1972 Sunbury Rock Festival that Jimmy Barnes attended. L.S. (Kiwi)
Don't remember certain parts of '72 Sunbury (lmao) but I sure as shit remember this segment. Imho, best part of the whole fucking concert. Magic.

'Time To Live' sounds like a much slower, less heavy, version, or vice-versa, of 'Mama'. Or 'Momma' as it is down on the album. Preferred the GTK version of 'Mama' much much better, ever though this version on here is pretty good.

We had a lot of good rock bands in Oz in the 70's, but Billy and the Aztecs were different in one key respect - they were the best. I still dig Aztec Energy today.

2 Years later, I was an underage teen at the International Hotel with my mates in Tullamarine watching Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs. Next band was Lobby Lloyd and the Coloured Balls. A top night. I got home in time and parents thought I was at a mate's place. His father (a Nazi war prisoner/survivor) knew where we were and covered for me. That man is still alive at 101 - a man I treasure for beating the Nazis through simple survival in the best place he could have chosen for mixing in - Australia
