Faded Love Deep In The Heart Of Texas: A Two-Step Through Time Alright, let’s talk about Faded Love Deep In The Heart Of Texas by Bob Wills and Mel Tillis. This little gem from MCA Records is a slice of pure Americana—genre? Folk, World, & Country, with a heavy lean into Country and Western Swing vibes. It’s like stepping into an old honky-tonk where the air smells like sawdust and spilled beer. And yeah, it’s got that unmistakable twang you can only find in US country music. First off, credit where it's due: Cliff Parman handled the arrangements here, and man, he didn’t mess around. The album feels tight but loose enough to make you want to grab your partner and hit the dance floor. Now, there are two tracks I gotta call out because they stuck with me long after the needle lifted off the record. The title track, "Faded Love," hits different. You know how some songs just feel lived-in? Like they’ve been worn down by heartbreak and late-night drives? That’s this one. Bob Wills’ fiddle work slides right into your soul, while Mel Tillis adds his smooth-as-grits vocals. It’s not flashy—it doesn’t need to be. This tune reminds me of those quiet moments when you’re sittin’ on the porch at sunset, thinking about someone who used to sit there with you. Damn, now I’m getting all sentimental. Then there’s "Deep In The Heart Of Texas." Okay, so maybe this isn’t exactly breaking new ground lyrically; we’ve all heard odes to Texas before. But something about the way these guys deliver it makes it feel fresh again. Maybe it’s the swing rhythm that gets under your skin or the way the horns pop in like surprise guests at a barbecue. Whatever it is, it works. By the second chorus, you’ll catch yourself humming along—even if you’ve never set foot in Texas. What strikes me most about this album is how timeless it feels. Sure, it came out ages ago (don’t ask me the year—I’m no historian), but it could’ve dropped yesterday for all the relevance it has today. There’s no auto-tune, no overproduced nonsense, just raw talent having fun making music together. And honestly? Listening to this album feels like finding a twenty-dollar bill in an old pair of jeans. Unexpected, kinda nostalgic, and leaves you wondering why more things can’t be this simple. So do yourself a favor: pour a glass of sweet tea, put this record on, and let Bob Wills and Mel Tillis take you back to a time when life moved slower—and the music moved faster. Oh, and hey—if anyone asks, tell ‘em I sent ya. Just don’t expect me to explain what “Western Swing” actually means. I think it’s one of those things you just… feel.

I met Mel in Dallas in 1972 at the request of a young lady he was seeing and whom I worked with in the Frito Lay Building. We had lunch, and during that lunch Mel told us the greatest "stutter joke" I have ever heard. In his memory I have told the joke many times and give him full credit. An amazing, approachable, and friendly person. There was no pretense about him at all. I really enjoyed his company.
