Hacienda Brothers - Whats Wrong With Right

Review by Andy & Kristi Murry

Album Review: What’s Wrong With Right by Hacienda Brothers If you’re a fan of country music that feels like a warm hug from the past but still has some modern swagger, then What’s Wrong With Right by the Hacienda Brothers is worth your time. Released in 2019 under Proper American (yep, outta the UK), this album blends traditional country, honky-tonk vibes, and even a sprinkle of folk and world influences. It’s like they took all the good stuff from decades ago, gave it a fresh coat of paint, and let Dave Gonzalez loose on lead vocals and guitar to make magic happen. Now, I gotta say, this isn’t just another run-of-the-mill country record—it’s got soul. You can tell everyone involved poured their heart into it, from Dan Penn producing most tracks to Jim DeMain mastering the whole thing so it sounds crisp as heck. And how about those credits? Accordion, steel guitar, trumpet—you name it, they’ve got it. It’s almost like a musical potluck where every dish is delicious. Two tracks stood out for me personally: “Midnight Dream” and “Cry Like A Baby.” Let me break it down real quick. “Midnight Dream” hits different, man. The piano work by Joe Terry sets this moody vibe right off the bat, and when Dave Gonzalez starts singing, it’s like he’s whispering secrets straight into your ear. The lyrics are simple yet haunting—kinda makes you think about missed chances or roads not taken. I dunno why, but I kept replaying this one late at night when everything else was quiet. Felt like my own little moment of reflection. Then there’s “Cry Like A Baby,” which flips the script entirely. This track has ENERGY with a capital E. Dale Daniel’s drumming gives it a punchy rhythm, while Dave Gonzalez’s electric guitar riffs bring the heat. It’s the kind of song that could get even the grumpiest person tapping their foot. Plus, who doesn’t love a classic cry-in-your-beer anthem done right? Honesty, it reminded me of old-school jukebox joints where no one cares if you’re dancing weird—they’re too busy having fun. One thing I didn’t expect? How much personality shines through each track. Whether it’s Dan Penn adding harmony vocals on “Cowboys To Girls” or Chris Gaffney’s accordion sneaking in here and there, the album feels alive. Like, these guys weren’t just phoning it in—they were feeling it. At the end of the day, What’s Wrong With Right is more than an album; it’s a vibe. It’s the soundtrack to lazy Sunday mornings, road trips through dusty highways, or even sitting alone thinking about life’s little ups and downs (funny enough, that’s actually one of the songs). If anything, listening to this made me realize something kinda random: we need more albums like this today. Ones that don’t try too hard to be cool but instead focus on being genuine. So yeah, give it a spin. Just don’t blame me if you find yourself humming “Midnight Dream” at 3 AM or randomly shouting “Cry Like A Baby!” during awkward silences. Trust me, though—you won’t regret it.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The Hacienda Brothers' album *What’s Wrong With Right* blends country, folk, and even a touch of children's music. Released in 2019 in the UK, it features Dan Penn, a legendary figure in Southern soul, as both a producer and harmony vocalist. Fun fact—Dan Penn also lends his voice to the track "Cowboys To Girls," adding a nostalgic vibe that ties the whole album together. It’s like a musical bridge between old-school Honky Tonk and modern Americana vibes.
