Brainrack - Progression Attack

Review by Will Wilkinson

Alright, let’s dive into Progression Attack by Brainrack. This 1996 Spanish banger from the label 100% Profesional is a wild ride through Acid and Hard Trance vibes. It’s got that raw, unfiltered energy you’d expect from the 90s electronic scene, but with enough twists to keep it fresh. The crew behind this—C. Bo, J. García, L. Peinado on performance duties, C.P.S. producing, and Brainrack handling the writing and composing—is clearly vibing hard together. Now, I gotta talk about two tracks that stuck in my head: “K-303” and “Happy Acid.” “K-303” hits like a caffeine rush at 3 AM when you’re already way too hyped. The acid squelches are sharp enough to cut glass, and there’s this relentless beat that just doesn’t quit. You can tell Brainrack was messing around with some serious Roland gear here—it’s got that classic TB-303 sound all over it. What makes this track unforgettable? It’s not trying too hard to be cool; it just is. No frills, no fluff, just pure sweaty dancefloor chaos. If you’ve ever been in a dimly lit club where everyone loses their minds, this tune would fit right in. Then there’s “Happy Acid,” which is kinda misleadingly named because it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Sure, it starts off bouncy and fun, but halfway through, things get weird. There’s this breakdown that feels like your brain’s melting into goo before snapping back into an even harder groove. It’s playful yet kinda sinister, like a candy-coated rave nightmare. Honestly, it’s the kind of song that sneaks up on you after a few listens and becomes your new obsession. The whole album has this DIY charm to it, like they threw everything against the wall to see what sticks. And honestly? Most of it does stick. Tracks like “Progression Attack” (the title track) bring the intensity without overcomplicating things, keeping the focus on pounding beats and acid lines that worm their way into your skull. Reflecting on Progression Attack, it’s clear Brainrack wasn’t aiming for perfection—they were chasing something raw and real. Listening to this now feels like stepping into a time capsule of underground rave culture. But hey, isn’t it funny how music made 25+ years ago still sounds futuristic? Maybe we haven’t caught up to the 90s yet. Or maybe… they were just ahead of us. Either way, crank this one loud if you want to feel alive.

Yo Germ, u know anyone who had those old Zed music mixtapes sold in lower Manhattan in the 90’s ? They had one titled “Trip Hop” in 95 which was actually acid breaks .... cant get my hands on it. Some songs still stuck in my head that need a track ID.
