Review by Christine Cowley

Märchen Im Lied: A Timeless Journey Through Grimm's World If you’ve ever wondered what it would feel like to step into the Brothers Grimm’s fairy tales, Märchen Im Lied by Brüder Grimm RundfunkKinderchor Leipzig is your golden ticket. Released in 1980 under the NOVA label in the GDR (yes, that’s East Germany), this album isn’t just a collection of songs—it’s an entire universe wrapped up in nursery rhymes and folk melodies. It’s raw, unpolished charm hits differently, like finding an old photo album stuffed with memories. The whole thing feels alive, thanks to Hans Sandig and his team of arrangers, conductors, and musicians who clearly poured their hearts into this project. But let me tell you about two tracks that stuck with me long after I hit pause—because some tunes don’t just stay in your ears; they crawl into your soul. First up, there’s "Der Hase Und Der Igel" (Herr Lampe Wollt' Spazieren Gehn). Oh man, where do I even start? This track has this playful bounce to it, like watching kids chase each other around on a sunny afternoon. The choir sounds so full of life, almost giggling through their singing. And then there’s that flute solo from Siegfried Herrmann—it sneaks up on you like a mischievous hare peeking out of tall grass. You can practically picture the race between the hedgehog and the hare unfolding right before your eyes. It’s not perfect, but that’s exactly why it works. It’s real. Imperfections make it human. Then there’s "Rotkäppchen" (Rotkäppchen Geht Durch Den Wald Allein), which honestly gave me goosebumps. There’s something haunting about how gentle yet eerie the melody feels. Like, yeah, we all know Little Red Riding Hood gets into trouble, but hearing it sung like this makes you feel her innocence—and dread. Voice actors like Anet Kresse bring these characters to life in ways that are both sweet and slightly unsettling. By the time the wolf shows up, you’re already leaning forward, gripping your seat. It’s storytelling at its finest, no visuals needed. What strikes me most about this album is how much care went into every detail. From Gerhard Kneifel’s arrangements to Manfred Kempfer’s design work, everything feels intentional. Even minor roles, like Helga Taschke’s guitar or Klaus Hebecker’s violin on “Rapunzel,” add layers that make the stories richer. These aren’t just songs—they’re little worlds waiting for listeners to explore. But here’s the kicker: listening to this record feels like peeking behind a curtain into another time. The GDR might be gone, but albums like this remind us of its creativity and spirit. Sure, the production quality might sound dated compared to today’s polished pop hits, but isn’t that part of its magic? It’s like hearing history breathe. So if you’re looking for something that’ll stick with you—not because it’s flawless but because it’s genuine—you need to give Märchen Im Lied a spin. Just be warned: once those voices get inside your head, they won’t leave anytime soon. Funny enough, now I kinda want to go chase rabbits or wander through a dark forest… hopefully without running into any wolves.

About Brüder Grimm RundfunkKinderchor Leipzig Hans Sandig

The Brothers Grimm (Brüder or Gebrüder* Grimm) are Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm, German professors best known for publishing collections of authentic folk tales and fairy tales, born in 1785 and 1786, respectively, in Hanau near Frankfurt. They were educated at the Friedrichs-Gymnasium in Kassel and later both read law at the University of Marburg. In 1830, they formed a household in Göttingen where they were to become professors. In 1837, the Brothers Grimm joined five of their colleague professors at the University of Göttingen to protest against the abolition of the liberal constitution of the state of Hanover by King Ernest Augustus I of Hanover. This group came to be known in Germany as Die Göttinger Sieben (The Göttingen Seven). Invoking their right to resist on reasons of natural and constitutional justice, they protested against the King's hubris to abrogate the constitution. For this, all professors were fired from their university posts and some even deported. Though politically divided by borders of duchies and kingdoms at that time, public opinion and academia in Germany almost unanimously supported the Grimms and their colleagues against the monarch. Wilhelm died in 1858; his elder brother Jakob died in 1863. They are buried in the St Matthäus Kirchhof Cemetery in the Schöneberg district of Berlin. The Grimms helped foment a nationwide democratic public opinion in Germany and are cherished as the progenitors of the German democratic movement, whose revolution of 1848/1849 was crushed brutally by the Kingdom of Prussia which reinstalled an absolute monarchy. *The use 'Brüder Grimm' is more common, the term 'Gebrüder' stresses their work relationship
