Choronzon - Era Vulgaris

Era Vulgaris by Choronzon: A Sonic Headtrip You Didn’t Know You Needed Released back in 2004, Era Vulgaris is one of those albums that feels like it crawled out of some dark corner of the internet and into your ears without asking permission. This thing’s got teeth, claws, and maybe even a tail—it's industrial metal meets death metal with enough pop/rock sprinkles to make you question if this was brewed in a lab or recorded live during an exorcism. Hailing from the US under Foamin' Sodomy Records (yes, really), Choronzon brings together all sorts of chaos across its tracks. And trust me, when I say "chaos," I mean it in the best way possible. The mastermind behind most of this madness? P. Emerson Williams—guitarist, keyboard wizard, vocalist, programmer… basically, he wears more hats than a haberdashery shop owner. Bass duties are handled by Christopher McClain, who holds down the low end like a champ while everything else goes absolutely haywire around him. It’s messy, wild, and oddly addictive. Now let’s dive into two standout tracks because ain’t nobody got time to talk about ‘em all: First up, “Ritual (Michelle Remembers)”—this track hits hard right off the bat. The moment those haunting synths kick in, you know you’re not just listening to music anymore; you’re being dragged into someone else’s nightmare. There’s something hypnotic about how the guitars grind against the programmed beats, creating this weird tension that never quite resolves itself. Vocally, Williams sounds possessed—as though he’s channeling spirits straight from the underworld. It sticks with you long after the song ends, kinda like gum on the bottom of your shoe but way cooler. Then there’s “Study in Decay,” which might as well be renamed “How to Ruin Your Day in Five Minutes Flat.” This one starts slow, almost teasing you with these eerie atmospherics before exploding into full-on auditory warfare. The riffs here are nasty little beasts, gnawing at your brain until you can’t help but bang your head along. Plus, the lyrical themes of rot and ruin feel uncomfortably real, like staring too long at an old abandoned house and wondering what horrors lurk inside. By the time it fades out, you’ll need a minute to catch your breath—and maybe a shower to wash off the existential dread. What makes Era Vulgaris so memorable isn’t just the technical skill or genre mashups—it’s the sheer audacity of it all. Most bands stick to one lane, but Choronzon? Nah, they swerve between black metal blastbeats, industrial noise walls, and alt-rock hooks like it’s nothing. Sure, it’s disjointed at times, but that unpredictability keeps you hooked. It’s like flipping through channels late at night and finding gold instead of infomercials. Reflecting on this album now, years later, it strikes me how ahead of its time it feels—or maybe completely out of time altogether. Listening to it again recently made me realize something strange: for an album so steeped in darkness and decay, it somehow leaves you feeling… alive. Like yeah, life sucks sometimes, but hey, at least we’ve got killer tunes to scream along to. So grab yourself a copy of Era Vulgaris if you’re brave enough. Just don’t blame me if your neighbors start giving you weird looks afterward.

About Choronzon

Choronzon is an industrial/black metal project from Winter Park, Florida, USA. NOTE: Choronzon began as two separate and entirely unrelated bands with the same name: the eastern Choronzon was a Florida based black metal-styled band formed in 1986 by , while its western counterpart Choronzon (aka ) was the San Francisco old school industrial project of formed in 1989. In 2002, the two respective Choronzons became aware of each other via the internet, and agreed to share use of the name. Then, they decided to go even further and collaborate musically since 2004. Prior to the merging of Choronzons, the East Coast Choronzon released of a series of self produced cassettes before being signed to the record label in 1998, and then released the album "Magog Agog". Three more albums followed, in which the sound moved further away from conventional black metal into industrial and experimental territories. The first release from the conjoined Choronzon was the double album "" in 2005. All recording was completed mere hours before Hurricane Katrina made landfall. Releases by Choronzon (West) by Demitria Monde Thraam: 1989 - 2006 - 2013 - Joint Choronzon releases: 2005 - (double album: CD1 "New World Chaos" directed by Demitria Monde Thraam + P. Emerson Williams (additional); CD2 "Complicity//Simplexity" directed by P. Emerson Williams + Demitria Monde Thraam (additional)) 2015 - / (double album) The current lineup of Choronzon is P. Emerson Williams (Guitars, Bass, Vocals), Demitria Monde Thraam (Software synthesizers, effects and samples, Vocals), and the xenodimensional entity for which the project is named, CHORONZON, the force of which is a current that guides each of the two individual 'cells' and connects them during the real-time occult magick ritual effectuations that the albums are soundtracks for and documentations of.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: the album *Era Vulgaris* by Choronzon is like a one-person powerhouse. Nearly everything on it—guitar, keyboards, vocals, programming—you name it, was done by P. Emerson Williams. Even the bass was handled by Christopher McClain, but P. Emerson really carried most of the weight. It’s wild how one person can blend so many styles like Industrial, Death Metal, and Black Metal into one intense package. And get this—it came out in 2004 under a label called Foamin' Sodomy Records. Tracks like "Ritual (Michelle Remembers)" and "Study in Decay" give it this dark, heavy vibe that sticks with you. Pretty impressive for a DIY-style project!

The project's 2000 album, Era Vulgaris, is a replica of its debut with more "evil" blast-beat tendencies and upper microtonal tuning.
