Creedence Clearwater Revival - Suzie Q I Heard It Through The Grapevine Long Versions

Review by Vernon Mincey

Alright, buckle up. This ain’t your grandma’s polished review—this is raw, unfiltered, and straight from the gut. Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Suzie Q I Heard It Through The Grapevine Long Versions is a no-bullshit ride through classic rock territory that punches you in the face and doesn’t apologize for it. Let’s dive into this beast. First off, let’s talk about “Suzie Q.” Holy hell, this track is a monster. It’s not just a song—it’s an experience. The groove hits like a freight train, and John Fogerty’s vocals are dripping with swagger. You can practically smell the swampy vibe oozing out of your speakers. What makes this version unforgettable? The long-ass runtime. Yeah, they stretch it out, giving every instrument room to breathe. That guitar solo? Pure fire. It’s one of those tracks where you forget time exists because you’re too busy headbanging like a lunatic. If this doesn’t get your blood pumping, check your pulse—you might be dead. Then there’s “I Heard It Through The Grapevine.” Now, sure, everyone knows the Marvin Gaye version, but CCR flips it on its head. They take that soulful original and crank it up to eleven, turning it into something darker, grittier. The bassline slaps so hard it could knock a grown man off his feet. And Fogerty? Dude sounds like he’s screaming from the depths of some haunted bayou. By the time the extended jam kicks in, you’re either losing your mind or nodding along like a maniac. Either way, it sticks with you. The album’s got that raw, unpolished charm that only CCR can pull off. No fancy tricks here—just good ol’ rock ‘n’ roll played loud and proud. The Netherlands pressing on Fantasy label? Solid as hell. Lacquer cut by HN? Clean enough to make audiophiles drool. But honestly, who cares about all that technical crap when the music itself grabs you by the throat? Here’s the kicker: listening to these long versions feels like being let in on a secret. Like, yeah, we all know these songs, but CCR takes them to another level. It’s messy, it’s wild, and it’s everything rock should be. And maybe that’s why it hits so damn hard—you don’t just hear it; you feel it. So, what’s the takeaway? Screw modern playlists and overproduced garbage. This album reminds us why rock will never die. Oh, and one last thing: if you’re blasting this at 2 a.m., don’t blame me when the neighbors start banging on the walls.

Creedence Clearwater Revival (often known as "CCR") were an American rock band, active 19671972, formed by John Fogerty (Vocals And Guitar), Tom Fogerty (Rhythm Guitar), Stu Cook (Bass), and Doug "Cosmo" Clifford (Drums). Despite being from Berkeley, California, the band's music usually invoked imagery of the American South. John Fogerty, Stu Cook, and Doug Clifford initially joined forces in 1959 as The Blue Velvets and later backed John's older brother, Tom, as Tommy Fogerty and the Blue Velvets. The group later changed their name to the Golliwogs and released several unsuccessful singles. In 1967, they changed their name to Creedence Clearwater Revival and John Fogerty took total control of the group. CCR was extremely prolific, releasing 6 albums and various singles between 1968 and 1970. However, the other members of the band chafed under John Fogerty's domination and in 1971 it was announced that Tom Fogerty had left the band. CCR made one more album, 1972's "Mardi Gras

Fortunate Son got me looking for more CCR, I discovered them late in life, but love listening, the same thing happened with me and the Doors.

Say that you'll be true and never leave me blue, Susie Q. While there are many CCR songs that I like, this one has to be one of my favorites. But it's so hard to decide on an absolute number one. When I listen to Born on the Bayou it's my fav. Fortunate Son? Same thing. Susie Q? Well you get the idea! Suffice it to say there's plenty to love under the CCR banner.
