Somewhere In Time by Damon Wild: A 1998 Tech-House Beast That Still Kicks Ass Alright, let’s cut the crap. If you’re into electronic music that punches you in the gut and leaves your brain buzzing like a neon sign on overdrive, Somewhere In Time is gonna slap you awake. Released back in ’98 via Synewave UK, this Damon Wild masterpiece isn’t just another album—it’s a raw, unfiltered trip through tech-house, techno, electro, and all things club/dance. And yeah, it still sounds fresher than most of what gets churned out today. First off, let’s talk tracks. There are 14 bangers here, but two stand out so hard they might as well have their own zip codes: “Opaque” and “Into Battle.” “Opaque” hits like a freight train wrapped in steel wool. It’s dark, brooding, and relentless—like someone took the grimiest corners of London nightlife and bottled them up for mass consumption. The bassline grinds against your skull while these glitchy synths swirl around like wasps pissed off at the world. You don’t listen to “Opaque,” man—you survive it. Every time I hear it, I’m reminded why tech-house will always be king when done right. Then there’s “Into Battle,” which feels like stepping into a cyberpunk warzone where robots throw down with humans for control of the last remaining dance floor. This track doesn’t mess around—it’s got this driving beat that locks you in like handcuffs, and those sharp stabs of synth? Pure adrenaline. It’s one of those songs that makes you wanna smash something beautiful just because you can. Brutal yet hypnotic, kinda like life itself. The rest of the album ain’t slouching either. Tracks like “Zoom,” “Spacerace,” and “Subways” keep the energy cranked to eleven, blending pounding rhythms with futuristic vibes that scream late-’90s innovation without feeling dated. Even slower cuts like “Curtains” or “Fluorescence” bring an eerie calm before dragging you back into chaos. Credit goes to Damon Wild not only for writing and producing this beast but also for knowing exactly how far he could push boundaries without losing cohesion. Oh, and shoutout to Isabelle Cutler for the design work—because if the music kicks ass, the visuals better hold their own too. Spoiler alert: They do. Here’s the kicker though. Listening to Somewhere In Time now, almost 25 years later, feels weirdly comforting. Like revisiting an old scar from a fight you barely remember starting. Sure, it’s abrasive, chaotic, and occasionally unhinged—but damn if it doesn’t feel alive. Most modern electronic albums sound polished to death, stripped of personality in favor of streaming stats. Not this one. This thing breathes fire. So go ahead, dive into Somewhere In Time. Just don’t say we didn’t warn ya—it bites back. And honestly? That’s exactly why it rules. P.S. If anyone tells you tech-house is dead, shove this album down their throat. Literally.
