Burt Bacharach - Portrait In Musik

Portrait In Musik: Burt Bacharach’s Wild Ride Through Jazz, Folk, and Big Band Vibes Alright, let’s get this straight—Burt Bacharach’s Portrait In Musik isn’t your run-of-the-mill jazz album. It’s more like a chaotic love letter to big band, folk, and everything in between. Released under Kapp Records (and Vogue for some reason? Who cares!), this German-born gem is packed with tracks that swing hard enough to knock you off your feet but soft enough to make you feel all mushy inside. And yeah, it's got repeats—because apparently Bacharach really wanted us to get the message. First up, “Walk On By.” Oh man, this track slaps. Like, seriously, it’s impossible not to remember. The horns hit like a freight train, while the strings sneak in like they’re whispering secrets in your ear. You can almost picture some smoky club in Berlin circa 1965, where everyone's pretending to be cooler than they actually are. But here’s the kicker—it’s on there twice. Twice! Did someone at Kapp Records just forget they already included it? Or was Bacharach so damn proud of how smooth it sounded he figured, screw it, let’s do it again. Either way, it works. That melody sticks to your brain like gum on a hot sidewalk. Then there’s “Don’t Make Me Over,” which opens the whole thing with a bang. It’s brassy as hell, and the vocals come through like a punch in the gut—you know, the kind that leaves you winded but also oddly satisfied. This one feels personal, like Bacharach’s throwing down the gauntlet. "Hey world," he seems to say, "I’m gonna hit you with emotion whether you like it or not." Spoiler alert: we liked it. A lot. But honestly, what makes this album wild is its refusal to sit still. One minute you’re vibing to “A House Is Not A Home,” drowning in melancholy piano lines, and the next you’re bouncing along to “Saturday Sunshine” like you just discovered coffee after a decade of tea. It’s messy, sure, but in the best possible way. Like when life throws curveballs and somehow you end up having the time of your life anyway. So yeah, Portrait In Musik doesn’t play by the rules. Maybe that’s why it sticks with you long after the needle lifts off the record. Or maybe it’s because listening to it feels like stepping into a time machine that only goes sideways instead of back. Whatever the case, if you’re looking for an album that’ll mess with your head in the most delightful way, this is it. Just don’t ask me why Germany decided to claim it—maybe even they needed a little chaos in their lives.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: Burt Bacharach’s album *Portrait In Musik* is a hidden gem that blends jazz, folk, and big band styles. It’s like a musical time capsule from Germany, released under Kapp Records and Vogue. The album features iconic tracks like “Walk On By” and “A House Is Not A Home,” but here’s the kicker—some songs appear twice, like “Don’t Make Me Over” and “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.” It’s almost as if Bacharach wanted to give listeners a second chance to fall in love with them. Kind of poetic, right?
