Album Review: I Need House by Blacksquare (2010)
So, I recently spun I Need House by Blacksquare, and man, it’s one of those albums that just sticks with you. Released in 2010 under Audiocast Productions, this little gem is pure house music goodness—no frills, no overthinking, just straight-up vibes. If you’re into electronic beats that make your feet move without even asking permission, you’re gonna dig this.
Let’s talk tracks. The title track, “I Need House,” hits hard right out the gate. It’s got this infectious groove that feels like a warm hug from an old friend. The bassline? Super chunky. Like, "can’t-ignore-it" chunky. And the way the synths swirl around? Pure magic. It’s one of those tunes where you don’t realize you’ve been nodding your head for five minutes straight. Honestly, it’s the kind of track that could soundtrack a late-night drive or a sun-soaked rooftop party—versatile, you know?
Then there’s the “Extended Mix” of the same track. Now, I’m usually not the biggest fan of extended versions because sometimes they feel like filler. But this one? Oh, it works. They stretch out the beat and let the layers breathe, giving it this hypnotic quality. Around the six-minute mark, there’s this tiny breakdown that builds back up so smoothly—it’s almost cinematic. It’s the kind of moment that makes you stop scrolling on your phone and just listen.
What I love about I Need House is how unpretentious it feels. Blacksquare isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel here; they’re just making damn good house music. The production is clean but not overly polished, which gives it this raw, authentic vibe. You can tell these guys were having fun in the studio.
Reflecting on it now, this album reminds me of why I fell in love with house music in the first place. It’s simple yet powerful, familiar yet fresh. Oh, and here’s a random thought—listening to this album feels like finding $20 in an old jacket pocket. Unexpected, kinda nostalgic, and it puts a smile on your face.
If you haven’t heard I Need House yet, do yourself a favor and give it a spin. Just don’t blame me if you suddenly find yourself dancing in your kitchen at 2 a.m.
