Davey Graham - All That Moody

Review by Юрий Матюхин

Alright, buckle up. Davey Graham’s All That Moody isn’t just another dusty relic from the '70s folk scene—it’s a raw, unfiltered punch to the gut that still feels alive today. Released in 1976 on some tiny UK labels (Eron Enterprises and Rollercoaster Records), this album is like a secret handshake for anyone who digs deep into the roots of folk, world, and country music. And yeah, it’s got that unmistakable Davey Graham vibe: restless, intricate, and kinda moody as hell. Let’s cut to the chase—this record doesn’t mess around. The man himself handles most of the heavy lifting, shredding his guitar like he’s trying to exorcise something dark lurking inside him. Keshav Sathe adds layers with tabla and tambura, giving tracks like “Blue Raga” an almost hypnotic edge. But what really sticks? For me, it’s gotta be “Anji” and “Blues For Gino.” “Anji” slaps harder than it has any right to. It’s not flashy or overproduced; it’s just Davey doing what he does best—fingerpicking circles around everyone else while somehow making it sound effortless. This track feels like walking through foggy streets at dawn, lost but not scared. You remember it because it doesn’t try too hard—it just is. No preachy lyrics, no unnecessary frills. Just pure, stripped-down brilliance. Then there’s “Blues For Gino,” which hits different. It’s gritty, messy even, but in the best way possible. The basslines from Roger Bunn rumble underneath like distant thunder, and Davey’s guitar work here is so sharp it could cut glass. There’s anger in these notes, but also a weird kind of hope. Like life kicking your ass, but you’re still standing anyway. It’s the kind of song that makes you wanna light a cigarette, even if you don’t smoke. The rest of the album ain’t bad either. Tracks like “Suite In D Minor” and “Sunshine Raga” show off Graham’s knack for blending styles without losing his own voice. Sure, some parts drag a bit, but when it works, it works. Finger cymbals? Tabla? Tambura? Dude wasn’t afraid to throw everything at the wall to see what stuck. Spoiler alert: most of it did. So why does All That Moody matter now? Maybe because it reminds us how good music can feel dangerous. Or maybe because it proves that perfection is overrated—what sticks with you is the stuff that’s real, flawed, and human. Either way, listening to this album feels like finding an old Polaroid in the attic. Faded, imperfect, but full of stories you can’t help but wonder about. And hey, here’s the kicker: Davey Graham probably didn’t give a damn whether people loved this album or not. He made it for himself, first and foremost. That’s rare these days—and honestly? Kinda badass.

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know that Davey Graham's 1976 album *All That Moody* blends folk with world influences, thanks to the talented Keshav Sathe on tabla and tambura? It’s wild how this UK release mixes traditional sounds with tracks like "Anji" and "Blue Raga." Plus, Davey played finger cymbals himself—talk about multitasking! The album even includes liner notes by Ron Milner, adding a personal touch. Pretty cool, right?
