David Soul - This Train The Road Is Long

Album Review: This Train The Road Is Long by David Soul (1970) Alright, let’s talk about this little slice of folk magic from way back in 1970. David Soul’s This Train The Road Is Long is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. It’s not flashy, it doesn’t scream for attention, but once you give it a spin, it digs its roots deep into your soul. Released under Paramount Records, this US-born gem blends Folk, World, and Country vibes like a warm hug on a cold day. Now, I gotta say, the title track “This Train” hit me right in the feels. There’s something about the way Soul sings it—like he’s telling you a story over coffee at some dusty roadside diner. The melody feels timeless, almost like an old spiritual you’ve heard before but can’t quite place. And man, those lyrics? They’re simple yet heavy, painting pictures of journeys, choices, and moving forward even when the road gets rough. You don’t just listen to “This Train,” you kinda live through it for three minutes. Then there’s “The Road Is Long.” If “This Train” is the heart of the album, this one’s the backbone. It’s slower, grittier, with a rawness that makes you feel every mile David must’ve traveled while writing it. The guitar work here is understated but so damn effective—it’s like it’s whispering secrets only you can hear. By the end of the song, you might find yourself staring out the window, wondering where your own road has taken you. That’s the power of this track; it sticks with you long after the needle lifts off the record. What strikes me most about this album is how unpolished it feels. These days, everything’s auto-tuned and layered to death, but This Train The Road Is Long keeps it real. It’s got scratches, cracks, and imperfections—and honestly? That’s what makes it beautiful. Listening to it feels like flipping through an old photo album. Sure, the edges are frayed, and some pages are faded, but each snapshot tells a story worth remembering. Here’s the kicker though—David Soul wasn’t just some random guy strumming a guitar. This dude went on to become a TV star (Starsky & Hutch, anyone?), which blows my mind. How many actors do you know who dropped a legit folk album in the '70s? Not many, I reckon. So next time you think about Starsky cruising around in that red car, remember he also made music that could stop you in your tracks. So yeah, if you’re into albums that make you think, feel, and maybe shed a tear or two, check out This Train The Road Is Long. Just don’t blame me if you start daydreaming about hopping trains and chasing horizons afterward.

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know? David Soul, best known for his acting role as Hutch in the TV series "Starsky & Hutch," actually kicked off his career in music. In 1970, he released a folk album called *This Train / The Road Is Long* under Paramount Records. It’s wild to think that before he was chasing bad guys on screen, he was crooning folk tunes like the title tracks "This Train" and "The Road Is Long." Kind of gives a whole new meaning to his multi-talented resume!

I wish I could track down the  official lyrics ,  sheet music, or the  songwriter, for these two songs   I wish that they would have re-released this  &  Long Road Home, after he hit it big.

I love them ,  only the  music does drown his voice out a little.   Wonder if he sung the se on Merv  Griffin  when he was the  "Covered Man" ?

No luck finding those  nuggets of information, though.

I am sorry , that I never saw this reply. Maybe you know by now. It is a picture form the time that David did paint. There is a larger picture of him with a brush and sketch.

Another beautiful song of David's but I always thought the music drowned out his wonderful voice in some spots. Thank you so much for sharing.
