Deodato - Do It Again

Do It Again by Deodato: A Sonic Fiesta That Still Grooves in 2023 Alright, let’s dive into Do It Again, the 1974 gem from Eumir Deodato, a guy who could probably turn your grocery list into a funky jazz banger if he wanted to. Released under CTI Records and produced by the legendary Creed Taylor (the dude behind some of the smoothest sounds ever), this album is like a passport stamped with genres—Latin, Funk/Soul, Pop, Jazz—and styles so diverse they should come with their own tour guide. Brazilian Pop? Check. Bossa Nova? Double-check. Disco vibes that make you wanna moonwalk in your living room? Oh, you bet. Now, onto the tracks. With 14 songs on the menu, it’s hard to pick favorites, but two stand out like neon signs in a foggy night: “Whirlwinds” and “Do It Again.” Let’s break ‘em down. “Whirlwinds” hits you right off the bat with its breezy yet punchy vibe—it’s like sipping an ice-cold caipirinha while someone whispers sweet nothings about global jazz fusion into your ear. The rhythm section grooves so tight it feels like they’re conspiring against you, forcing your feet to move even if you’re just sitting there trying to act all chill. And those horn blasts? They’re not asking for permission—they’re demanding attention. This track sticks because it doesn’t just play; it practically invites itself over for dinner and stays till dessert. Then there’s the title track, “Do It Again,” which might as well be renamed “How to Make People Move Without Saying a Word.” It’s got this infectious energy that makes you wanna grab whoever’s nearby and say, “Hey, we’re doing the twist now!” The bassline slaps harder than your aunt at a family reunion, and the melody loops around your brain like a cat chasing its tail. You’ll find yourself humming it hours later, wondering how something so simple can feel so damn good. The rest of the album isn’t exactly filler either. Tracks like “Super Strut” bring the funk heat, while “Theme from Star Trek” gives us a jazzy take on sci-fi nostalgia—because why not? But honestly, what ties everything together is Deodato’s knack for blending worlds. He takes elements from Brazil, drops them smack dab in the middle of American pop culture, and sprinkles a little disco glitter on top for good measure. It’s chaotic, sure, but in the best possible way. So here’s the kicker: Listening to Do It Again feels like stumbling into a party where everyone speaks a slightly different language, but somehow, you understand each other perfectly through dance moves and smiles. Sure, it came out nearly five decades ago, but guess what? Good music doesn’t check expiration dates. And hey, if nothing else, remember this—you haven’t truly lived until you’ve strutted down your hallway pretending you’re starring in a spy movie set to “Havana Strut.” Trust me on that one.
