The Flamin' Groovies - Teenage Head

Review by Catherine Lenci

Teenage Head by The Flamin' Groovies: A Wild Ride Through Rock 'n Roll Chaos Alright, let’s talk about Teenage Head, the 1971 album that feels like a garage party gone gloriously off the rails. The Flamin’ Groovies weren’t just another band trying to fit into neat categories—they were proto-punks before punk even had a name, blending hard rock, blues rock, and psychedelia with enough swagger to make your speakers sweat. This record is raw, messy, and absolutely unforgettable. First up, “Kicks.” Oh man, this track hits like a caffeine jolt at midnight. It’s got that punchy, rebellious energy that makes you wanna grab life by the horns (or maybe just grab a beer). Roy Loney’s vocals are all attitude—gritty and unapologetic—and when the guitar kicks in, it’s like being thrown on the back of a motorcycle speeding down some neon-lit highway. You can almost smell the leather jackets and hear the screech of tires. I remember this one because it’s impossible not to crank it loud enough for the neighbors to complain. If you don’t feel invincible after hearing “Kicks,” check your pulse—you might be dead. Then there’s “Slow Death,” which flips the vibe completely. Where “Kicks” is fiery and fast, this song crawls under your skin with its moody blues-rock groove. Cyril Jordan’s guitar work here is hypnotic, dripping with emotion while still feeling untamed. Lyrically, it’s dark as hell, but somehow comforting too, like listening to someone spill their guts over a bottle of whiskey. It sticks with me because it’s the kind of tune that makes you sit alone in the dark, nodding along like, “Yeah, we’ve all been there.” What really sets Teenage Head apart from other albums of its time is how it refuses to take itself too seriously. These guys weren’t chasing perfection—they were chasing fun, chaos, and pure rock ‘n roll adrenaline. Tracks like “Louie Louie” and “Shakin’ All Over” remind you why these songs became classics in the first place; they’re simple, infectious, and utterly timeless. And yeah, sure, some tracks get a little loose around the edges, but isn’t that what makes them so damn charming? The production has that lo-fi charm that modern albums often lack. Thanks to Alan Corbeth engineering and Richard Robinson producing, the sound feels alive, like you’re right there in the studio with the band, catching every mistake and moment of magic. Even Peter Hujar’s photography adds to the vibe—his shots capture the scrappy, no-frills aesthetic perfectly. Looking back, it’s wild how many countries embraced this album—from the US to Japan to Brazil. Maybe it’s because everyone loves an underdog story, or maybe it’s just proof that good rock doesn’t need fancy gimmicks to cross borders. Either way, Teenage Head remains a cult favorite for anyone who digs their music loud, dirty, and full of heart. So, if you haven’t spun this yet, do yourself a favor and hit play. Just don’t blame me if you find yourself air-guitaring in your living room at 2 AM. And hey, fun fact: did you know Jim Dickinson played piano on the first three tracks? Dude was basically the secret sauce behind so many legendary recordings. Makes you wonder what other hidden gems are lurking in this chaotic masterpiece. Rock on, folks.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool fact: The Flamin' Groovies' album *Teenage Head*, released in 1971, is like a musical time machine. It blends raw garage rock, proto-punk energy, and bluesy vibes, making it way ahead of its time. Fun twist—this album was so influential that a Canadian punk band later named themselves after it! Tracks like "Slow Death" and their cover of "Louie Louie" became underground classics. With credits spanning multiple countries and labels, the album's reach shows how universal great rock music can be. Plus, having Jim Dickinson on piano for some tracks adds that extra magic touch.

Just as there are Lowell George Little Feat fans, such as I am, I'm also a Roy Loney Flamin' Groovies fan. I hate to say it, and it's apostasy, but "Shake Some Action" isn't as good as any cut on this swell album. After Loney left the band, something was lost, which was never regained. If you can find it, look for Loney's 1977 EP, "Artistic As Hell," which featured the original Flamin' Groovies. Only four songs were recorded, because Roy Loney and Cyril Jordan had a Lou Reed-John Cale mutual antipathy. But "Supersnazz," "Flamingo," and this terrific slab of rock and roll are what I turn to when I want to hear the Groovies. Five stars!

Yeah the Mick Jagger comment re: Teenage Head being what Let it Bleed should've been or whatever is surely apocryphal, but....

Alvin Youngblood Hart: “The Flamin’ Groovies could have been The Rolling Stones.” Well, in 1971, Loney and Jordan were certainly writing songs on par with Jagger and Richards! It’s a damn shame this classic lineup did not continue after this awesome album!

“Got to see the empire's tallest building, Where the plane shot that big monkey And they killed him.”
One of my favourite lines, from one of my favourite albums. You can’t oversell its greatness. Neck and neck with Sticky Fingers for top album of 1971 (and many others, but for this comment, those are the only two that matter)

Believe I'll go down to the city
Where the neon lights
all shine so bright and pretty

Where the night time girls
are always laughing
Movie stars are autographing there
There's so much that I want to see
Buy myself a store-bought suit
and a Stetson and a big fur coat
So the winter never gets in
Take myself down to the station
Ask the girl for information
about my trip for NYC

Got to see the empire's tallest building
Where the plane shot that big monkey
And they killed him
But I'm a fool to go on wishing
Might as well go on with my fishing
Oh Lord, I wish I was free

City lights keep calling me
Telling me to leave my country home
Leave my home
