Review by WIKI START UP

Turned 21 by Fludd: A Raw Slice of Canadian Rock History Released in 1971, Turned 21 is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. Hailing from Canada and backed by Warner Bros. Records, Fludd’s debut effort doesn’t try to reinvent rock—it just nails the vibe. Produced by Adam Mitchell (yep, the same guy who later rocked it with The Paupers), this record feels like a snapshot of its era, warts and all. With songwriting credits split between Brian and Ed Pilling, it’s got a scrappy charm that sticks with you long after the needle lifts off the vinyl. Let’s talk tracks. The title track, “Turned 21,” hits hard right outta the gate. It’s not flashy—just straight-up gritty rock with a groove that digs into your brain. You can almost picture some smoky club in Toronto back in the day, where Fludd probably cut their teeth before landing this deal. Lyrically, it’s about growing pains, but there’s no overthinking here; it’s raw emotion wrapped in crunchy guitar riffs. If you’re into bands like The Guess Who or April Wine, this’ll feel like home base. Then there’s “Easy Being No One.” This one’s slower, moodier, and kinda haunting. It’s the kind of tune that makes you stop what you’re doing and just listen. The vocals have this raspy sincerity, like they’ve lived through every word they’re singing. And man, the guitar solo near the end? Total goosebump material. It’s not perfect—the production has that lo-fi edge typical of the early ‘70s—but maybe that’s why it works so well. It feels real. What strikes me most about Turned 21 is how unpolished yet confident it sounds. These guys weren’t chasing trends—they were making music for themselves, and it shows. Sure, the album didn’t exactly set the charts on fire, but isn’t that part of its appeal? It’s a hidden gem, the kind of thing you stumble across at a thrift store and end up playing on repeat because it’s got soul. Funny thing—I couldn’t help thinking while listening to this: if Fludd had dropped this album ten years later, during the heyday of indie rock, they might’ve been huge. But maybe that’s the beauty of it. They existed in their own little pocket of time, cranking out tunes without worrying about algorithms or streaming numbers. So yeah, check out Turned 21. It’s not gonna change your life, but it might remind you why rock ‘n’ roll still matters. Plus, who doesn’t love an underdog story?

The Canadian references are interesting, were they Canadian? I came accross this on either Caroline or R.N.L.I so not speaking Dutch it wasn't clear to me where the group were from, loved it anyway.

I really like this song yet I don't get the message. It's got a lovely, fun, cheerful melody and feel but the lyrics are totally depressing!

Will someone explain to me please, if I am missing something?

Is it that he didn't enjoy his childhood and from now on he's going to make his life better?

Maybe it's one of those songs that really doesn't have a message and it's for us to decide what it means.

Thanks. Here are the lyrics. :)

You make me feel my life is over
You make me feel my life has gone
You make me feel my life is over
Ah, though it's only just begun

Turned 21 without a grey hair
Yes, you might say I had the key to the door
I felt my life was rather sheltered
Oh, but it won't be anymore

Day after day
When everything I did went wrong
I blamed myself then
Then I was a fool
Yes I was a fool
Oh, so doggone blue, yes

You make me feel my life is over
You make me feel my life has gone
You make me feel my life is over
Oh, though it's only just begun

All my life
Then I was a fool
Yes I was a fool
Ah, so doggone blue, yeah

Turned 62....this song could be a testament for youth of today. Life is life. We live it and a life lived well is all that matters.

In addition there are many "young" people who think freely and also deserve to be heard by their peers and elders. It's never "over" for one if they beleiveandremember to treat one another the way they would like to be treated.Beauty is overrated. A sound mind ,and clean living keeps one young. It's so lovely to see elders and young people together. They are are wellspring of hope. I love this song because it's like Coldwater on the face. Many of us are humbled by our elders and their love of life. I am.xo

Life is eternal.and love is everything. Ageism is a real problem of society and mass media often caters to the youth culture of today. It's really about how you feel on the inside. None of us deserves to be judged by being a number..life experience and how one lives their truth is priceless.. it's insulting to be judged as "old

A relatively less than interesting period than the mid-point of the decade that preceded it. As such, Fludd's gem of a 45 was a bonafide attention getter when it was first released. Well written, well executed and flat out melodic and charismatic. Can't ask for much more than that in a single!

My late friend Roy Norris used to play this hit when he did the morning show on CKOM
The odd time Roy would be late and I would fill in for him until he arrived.

Great song. Never thought when I first heard it in 1971 that I would be looking it up on YouTube for my daughter's 21 birthday.
