Album Review: Schubertiade – A Romantic Stroll Through Schubert’s Genius Alright, let’s get one thing straight: Franz Schubert wasn’t just some dude with a quill and too much time on his hands. The man was basically the Shakespeare of music—if Shakespeare had written fewer tragedies and more songs about trout. Enter Schubertiade, an album that feels like stepping into a 19th-century Viennese salon where everyone’s wearing their fanciest waistcoats and pretending they understand poetry. This record brings together Elly Ameling (soprano extraordinaire), Hans Deinzer (clarinet wizard), and Jörg Demus (piano maestro) for a delightful romp through Schubert’s Romantic genius. It’s classy, it’s charming, and honestly? It’s kind of hard not to love. Let’s zoom in on two tracks that stuck with me because, well, I have the attention span of a goldfish otherwise. First up is “Die Forelle” (The Trout). If you’ve never heard this piece before, congratulations—you’re now officially cultured! This song isn’t just about fish; it’s practically an aquatic adventure movie set to music. Elly Ameling’s voice glides over the melody like a lazy river at summer camp, while Jörg Demus’ piano bubbles along underneath like someone forgot to turn off the faucet. And oh boy, when Hans Deinzer’s clarinet joins in, it’s like the trout itself decided to leap out of the water and do a little dance. You can almost picture Schubert sitting by a stream somewhere, scribbling notes as he daydreams about dinner. Spoiler alert: He probably caught that trout. Then there’s “Der Hirt Auf Dem Felsen” (The Shepherd on the Rock), which sounds way cooler than its title suggests. Picture this: a lone shepherd perched high above a valley, contemplating life, nature, and whether sheep are secretly judging him. That’s what this track feels like—a soulful journey from melancholy to hope. Ameling absolutely nails the emotional arc here, her voice soaring like an eagle who finally found its glasses after years of blurry vision. Meanwhile, Deinzer’s clarinet weaves in and out like a mischievous breeze, adding layers of drama without stealing the spotlight. By the end, you’ll feel like you’ve climbed that rock yourself—and maybe even conquered your fear of heights. Now, let’s talk production quality—or lack thereof. Okay, fine, it’s great. Orbis did a bang-up job capturing the warmth of these performances without making them sound like they were recorded inside a tin can. But honestly, does anyone care about labels anymore? What matters is how alive this music feels, like Schubert himself might pop out and ask if you’d like another glass of schnapps. Here’s the kicker, though: listening to Schubertiade makes you realize something weird about classical music. Sure, it’s elegant and timeless, but it’s also kinda… relatable? Like, yeah, Schubert wrote about shepherds and fish, but aren’t we all just trying to find our place in the world, hoping no one notices we’re faking it half the time? Maybe that’s why this album works so well—it reminds us that even geniuses get lonely sometimes. Final thought: If you’re looking for background noise while folding laundry, this ain’t it. But if you want music that grabs you by the lapels and whispers, “Hey, pay attention,” then Schubertiade is your jam. Just don’t blame me if you start crying during “Seligkeit.” Happens to the best of us.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *Schubertiade* brings together a dream team of classical talent. You’ve got Elly Ameling’s soaring soprano voice, Hans Deinzer’s soulful clarinet, and Jörg Demus’ masterful piano work. It’s like a musical conversation between friends, all rooted in Franz Schubert’s Romantic genius. One standout track, *Der Hirt Auf Dem Felsen* (*The Shepherd on the Rock*), is especially unique. It blends voice, clarinet, and piano in a way that feels both intimate and cinematic. Fun fact—this piece was one of Schubert’s last works, and it’s said he wrote it with a specific singer in mind. The album itself feels like stepping into 19th-century Germany, but it’s timeless enough to resonate even today.

"Contributed transformatively!!" I had no idea Schubert wasn't even 18 when he composed this, one of the greatest lied in the repertoire. Wow. "Collaborative artist." Any thoughts as to this term being used, which is growing in popularity, rather than "accompanist?"

Wonderfoul music piano and voice from Schubert
For Lieder, her songs are clean, uncluttered, and comfortable as if they were telling a story.
In particular, the piano of Demus is the best ensemble as if it was united with Ameling! Thanks, David!
