Gabor Szabo - Stormy Dear Prudence

Stormy Dear Prudence by Gabor Szabo: A Wild Ride Through Jazz’s Forgotten Corners Alright, let’s get one thing straight—Gabor Szabo’s Stormy Dear Prudence isn’t your grandma’s jazz record. Released in 1969 on Skye Records, this album slaps harder than most of what came out that year. It's a messy, beautiful collision of Gypsy Jazz and Jazz-Funk that feels like someone threw a bottle of absinthe into a smoky club and hit play. And yeah, it’s raw as hell. First up, “Dear Prudence.” If you’re thinking Beatles cover, think again. This ain’t no soft-rock remake; it’s a full-on assault. The guitar work here? Insane. Szabo rips through the melody like he’s trying to break free from some invisible cage. There’s this moment around halfway where the rhythm section just locks in with him—it’s not perfect, but damn if it doesn’t feel alive. Like, you can practically hear the sweat dripping off the band. That track sticks with me because it takes something familiar and flips it on its head, making you forget there was ever another version. Then there’s “Stormy,” which hits like a punch to the gut. The groove is nasty, man. You know those songs that make you wanna drive too fast or do something reckless? Yeah, this is one of them. Szabo’s playing has this wild, untamed energy—you can tell he’s not holding back. Every note screams freedom, even when it gets chaotic. When the horns kick in (or maybe they’re synths? Hard to tell), it’s like stepping into a fever dream. Feels dangerous, unpredictable, kinda like life itself. What makes this album stick? It’s real. No overproduced nonsense, no trying to be trendy for the sake of sales. Just a dude and his band laying it all out there, warts and all. Sure, it’s got rough edges, but that’s what makes it human. Here’s the kicker though—if Gabor Szabo were alive today, I bet he’d laugh at how people try to categorize music. Gypsy Jazz? Jazz-Funk? Screw labels. This album is proof that great art doesn’t fit neatly into boxes. So throw it on, crank the volume, and let it mess you up a little. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
