Album Review: Sinfonía N88 & Sinfonía N92 "Oxford" by Haydn, Böhm, and Orquesta Filarmónica De Viena Alright, let’s get into this. If you’re into classical music—or even if you’re just dipping your toes in—this album is one of those gems that grabs you by the ears and doesn’t let go. It’s Franz Joseph Haydn doing what he does best: crafting symphonies that feel both grand and intimate at the same time. Throw in Karl Böhm as the conductor and the legendary Orquesta Filarmónica De Viena, and you’ve got a recipe for something special. Now, I’ll be honest—I didn’t sit through all the tracks in one go (who has that kind of attention span these days?), but two stood out to me like neon signs in the dark. First up, there’s Sinfonía Nº 92 “Oxford”—specifically the Adagio - Allegro Spiritoso. This track hits different. It starts off slow, almost like it’s tiptoeing around your brain, but then BAM—it kicks into high gear with an energy that feels kinda mischievous. You can tell Haydn was having fun here. It’s playful, but not in a childish way; more like when someone winks at you during a serious conversation. That contrast between calm and chaos is what makes it stick in my head. Then there’s the Menuetto: Allegretto - Trio - Minuetto from Sinfonía Nº 88. Oh man, this one’s smooth. Like butter-on-hot-toast smooth. The orchestra nails the balance between elegance and groove, which sounds weird to say about classical music, but trust me, it grooves. There’s a lightness to it, like watching leaves dance in the wind, but underneath, there’s this steady heartbeat keeping everything together. It’s the kind of piece that makes you want to close your eyes and drift off, except you don’t because you don’t wanna miss a second of it. What really sells this album, though, is how crisp everything sounds. Credit goes to Deutsche Grammophon for making sure every note feels alive. And Karl Böhm? Dude knows how to wrangle an orchestra. He doesn’t just conduct—he tells a story, and the Orquesta Filarmónica De Viena plays along like they’ve been waiting their whole lives to tell it. But here’s the thing: listening to this album made me realize something kinda funny. Classical music isn’t supposed to make sense in our chaotic, TikTok-scrolling world, right? Yet, somehow, these centuries-old compositions still hit harder than half the stuff on Spotify. Maybe we’re all just craving a bit of timeless beauty without realizing it. Or maybe I’m overthinking it. Either way, this album’s worth your time. So yeah, whether you’re a die-hard classical fan or just looking for something chill yet exciting, give this one a shot. Just don’t blame me if you end up humming minuets in line at the grocery store.

About Haydn Böhm, Orquesta Filarmónica De Viena

Born: 1732-03-31 (Rohrau, Austria) Born 31 march or 1st April, 1732. Died: 1809-09-05 (Vienna, Austria). Franz Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He brings the "sonata form" to a very high degree of improvement. His symphonies and his string quartets (forms of which he is considered "the father") have become highly inspirational style models. Haydn made a fundamental contribution to the development of chamber music; thanks to the numerous quartets, trios for piano, for strings and also with the unusual trios for baryton, viola and cello.
