Album Review: Roadie Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1980) Alright, so let’s talk about Roadie, the soundtrack to the 1980 flick that kinda flew under the radar but still managed to drop some bangers. This album is a wild mix of genres—folk, rock, country, and even a dash of hard rock for good measure. It’s like someone threw a bunch of different vibes into a blender and hit “puree.” And honestly? It works. Mostly. The soundtrack features tracks from a bunch of artists, which makes it feel less like a cohesive album and more like a playlist you’d hear on a road trip with your cool older cousin who knows all the good tunes. Warner Bros. Records put this thing out, and with big names like Shep Gordon and Steve Wax as executive producers, you know they weren’t messing around. The design by Willardson & White Studio gives it that retro vibe, and Roger Bergendorff’s illustrations slap too. Now, let’s get into the meat and potatoes—or should I say, the guitar riffs and pedal steel? Two tracks that really stuck with me are “Drivin’ My Life Away” and “Ring of Fire.” First up, “Drivin’ My Life Away.” Man, this song just feels like being on the open road. Eddie Rabbitt nails it with his smooth-as-hell vocals, and the twangy guitars give it that country-rock edge. It’s one of those songs where you can almost picture yourself cruising down some dusty highway, windows down, wind in your hair. I mean, come on—it’s catchy as hell, and the lyrics are relatable if you’ve ever felt like life’s just one long drive. Plus, it’s got that pop-rock energy that makes it impossible not to tap your foot along. Then there’s “Ring of Fire.” Yeah, yeah, we all know Johnny Cash made this one iconic, but hearing it here feels fresh. The version on this soundtrack has its own spin—still got that fiery passion, but it’s dialed back just enough to fit the movie’s vibe. There’s something raw and real about it that hits different when you’re listening to it outside the context of Cash’s original masterpiece. Other standout tracks include “That Lovin’ You Feelin’ Again,” which is pure soft-rock gold, and “Pain,” which brings the grittier side of rock ‘n’ roll to the table. Honestly, the whole album feels like a snapshot of what was going on musically in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s—a little bit of everything mashed together, sometimes messy but always fun. What’s wild is how far this soundtrack reached. We’re talking US, Canada, Japan, Europe—you name it, they shipped it there. That says something about the global appeal of these tunes, right? Even Ecuador got in on the action! At the end of the day, Roadie isn’t perfect. Some tracks feel dated, and the genre-hopping might be a bit much for some listeners. But damn, if you’re looking for an album that captures the spirit of its time—and throws in a few gems you’ll keep coming back to—it’s worth a listen. Oh, and here’s a random thought: I wonder if anyone ever listened to this while actually driving cross-country. Like, did someone load up their cassette player, crank the volume, and live out their own personal road movie? If not, someone definitely should’ve.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: the *Roadie* soundtrack, released in 1980, was a global phenomenon. It blended genres like Folk, Rock, and Country, appealing to fans across continents—from the US to Japan, and even Ecuador. The album wasn’t just music; it was a collaborative masterpiece. Bones Howe supervised recordings, while Roger Bergendorff’s illustrations gave it a unique visual flair. Fun fact: "That Lovin’ You Feelin’ Again," one of the tracks, even won a Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group. Not bad for an album tied to a movie about a road crew!

Love this song, BUT when your heart is hurting, broken, aching and you're yearning for that one who's gone... DON'T LISTEN, DON'T DO IT !!! LOL, I remember a moment in time I was in this position, listening to this song, and on repeat...trying to drive home in the rain and there was more wet inside my car then outside of it... totally broke me down, I can't even lie.
