Headroom - Too Dark Park EP

Review by Alison Moore Smith

Too Dark Park EP by Headroom: A Techno Time Capsule from 1999 Alright, buckle up, because we’re diving into Too Dark Park EP by Headroom—a slice of UK techno wizardry that dropped in 1999 on Planet Rhythm Records. This isn’t your polished, overproduced EDM banger; it’s raw, gritty, and unapologetically underground. If you’re into beats that feel like they were forged in a neon-lit basement, this one’s for you. First off, let’s talk about “Top.” It’s the kind of track that sneaks up on ya. Starts with this minimal kick drum that feels like someone tapping their foot impatiently at a bus stop. Then BAM—it layers in these glitchy synths and warped basslines that sound like robots arguing over who gets to DJ next. The groove is hypnotic but won’t lull you to sleep—nope, it keeps you sharp, like coffee spiked with Red Bull. I remember this track because it’s got that perfect blend of chaos and control, like techno’s version of organized anarchy. Then there’s “Tuker,” which might as well be renamed “Earworm Deluxe.” This thing has a melody loop so catchy, it’ll squat rent-free in your brain for days. Imagine being chased through a dark alley by a gang of malfunctioning arcade machines—that’s the vibe. There’s something oddly satisfying about how stripped-down yet punchy it feels. No frills, just pure beat-driven adrenaline. Honestly, if this track doesn’t make you nod your head or tap your feet, check your pulse—you might be a zombie. As for “Cope,” well, it lives up to its name. It’s darker, moodier, almost like the album needed a designated brooder corner. But even here, Headroom pulls off the balancing act between tension and release. You can practically picture some shadowy figure in reflective shades losing their mind to this in a packed warehouse rave. Looking back, Too Dark Park EP feels less like a collection of songs and more like a snapshot of late-’90s electronic experimentation. It’s not trying too hard to impress anyone, which makes it all the more charming. And isn’t that what great music does? Sneak up on you when you least expect it? So yeah, props to Headroom for crafting something that still holds up two decades later. Also, fun fact: listening to this while cleaning your room will make vacuuming seem way cooler than it actually is. Who knew techno could turn chores into cardio?

About Headroom

The Headroom project name consisting of Patrik Skoog, Aon FluX and Henrik Larsson started off in southern Sweden sometime in 1997. Prior to that each member had a history of producing music, as early fans of Electronica and Industrial music from artists such as cEvin Key and Front 242, they started to make Electro music with Ataris and Synthezisers. This genre has been reflected in their music production over the years and has slowly evolved into the current sound which is rather more influenced by the likes of early Detroit pioneers and modern Techno. In 1998 Headroom signed their first record deal to release a twelve-inch on well established Stockholm techno label Loop Records. That debut was followed up by a single on the at the time all-fresh Evil Deception label, hosted by the Cosmic One record store in Malmö. More releases have followed on this hard-hitting hometown label under different project names. Furthermore after domestic work, releases came on respected European labels such as Shokoy Records, Holzplatten, Parasound, Planet Rhythm and Compound. After playing in the USA, Europe and the UK Headroom have proved to the world their skills behind turntables as well and either work tag-team, spinning 6 decks, or as solo-DJs. As of the first year of the new Millennium, Headroom have made their debut on the classic label Synewave, as well as releases coming from the other side of the Atlantic through labels like Blueline and Contaminated.
