Highway 1 by Highway: A Wild Ride Through Late '70s Pop Rock Alright, let’s get this straight—Highway 1 ain’t no masterpiece, but damn if it doesn’t have its hooks. Released in 1979 across the UK, US, Netherlands, and Japan, this thing is a chaotic blend of pop rock, soft rock, and AOR vibes that somehow works… most of the time. With labels like Epic and RSO backing them up, you’d think they were aiming for stadium glory. But nah, this album feels more like a road trip where the GPS keeps glitching—you’re not sure where you’re headed, but hey, at least the scenery’s kinda cool. Let me break it down for ya. First off, “Twistin’ Patricia.” What even is this track? It starts with some funky sitar action courtesy of producer Jay Lewis (yeah, he played sitar on A2—how random is that?) and then BAM, Harvey James rips into a guitar solo so smooth it makes you wanna light a cigarette just to look cooler while listening. This song sticks because it’s got swagger. Like, who else drops sitar into what should’ve been your standard radio-friendly bop? The percussion from Steve Forman adds this weird little shuffle beat that keeps things unpredictable. Honestly, it’s messy as hell, but I can’t stop hitting replay. Then there’s “(Feels Like It’s) Slippin’ Away,” which sounds like someone took an Eagles B-side, threw in a synthesizer freakout by Bill Cuomo, and called it a day. Daryl Braithwaite’s vocals here are pure gold though—he’s pouring his heart out like he just caught his girl cheating or something. You feel it, man. And those harmonies? Tony Mitchell’s backing vocals give it this layered richness that sneaks up on you. It’s cheesy as all get-out, but also kinda irresistible. Every time I hear it, I’m reminded why people used to blast their car stereos in parking lots back in the day. Now, let’s talk about the rest of this beast. Tracks like “Mooie Meisjes” and “Zomerliefde” scream Euro-pop charm, while cuts like “Cheatin’ Eyes” lean hard into country-tinged drama. There’s even a medley (“Sugar Baby Medley”) that feels like they couldn’t decide between three songs, so they mashed ‘em together. Bold move—or stupid one? You be the judge. Oh, and props to whoever thought adding Sharon Robinson and Carmen Twillie as guest vocalists was a good idea—it actually pays off on tracks like A4 and B4. But honestly, Highway 1 is all over the place. One minute you’re vibing to saxophone solos courtesy of Jim Horn, the next you’re scratching your head at lyrics about moo cows or whatever (“Mooie Vreemde Vrouw,” anyone?). And yet...it’s oddly endearing. Maybe it’s the rawness, or maybe it’s just nostalgia kicking in, but this record has personality dripping outta every pore. Here’s the kicker: despite being released in four countries, Highway never quite blew up globally. Weird, right? They had everything going for ‘em—solid musicianship, catchy tunes, even Roger Davies handling A&R duties (the guy who later managed Tina Turner!). But instead of superstardom, they faded into obscurity. Kinda poetic when you think about it. So yeah, Highway 1 might not change your life, but it’ll sure as hell give you something to talk about. Or argue over. Whatever floats yer boat.

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know that the album *Highway 1* by Highway had a truly global reach? Released in 1979, it found its way into markets across the UK, US, Netherlands, and Japan. What’s fascinating is how localized the tracklist became—songs like *"Mooie Meisjes"* (Beautiful Girls) or *"Voor Sonja Doe Ik Alles"* (I’ll Do Anything for Sonja) were tailored specifically for Dutch audiences. Meanwhile, tracks like *"Twistin’ Patricia"* and *"Heart Get Ready"* catered to broader pop-rock tastes. With contributions from talents like Daryl Braithwaite on vocals and even sitar work by producer Jay Lewis, this album was an eclectic mix of styles, blending Soft Rock, Pop Rock, and AOR seamlessly. It’s like they made sure there was something for everyone, no matter where you were tuning in from!

Sherbet were huge here in the 70s. Another night on the road is the best song on this LP.
