Infraktion - Sous Les Pavés La Rage

Review by Jarret Pulido

Alright, let’s dive into Sous Les Pavés La Rage by Infraktion. Released in '96 under Crash Disques, this French punk rock gem is raw, gritty, and unapologetically loud. It’s the kind of album that feels like a punch to the gut—in a good way. You can tell these guys weren’t trying to polish things up too much; it’s real, messy, and full of attitude. The lineup reads like a DIY dream team: Vérole on lead vocals bringing that raspy energy, Face and Kristov shredding guitars, Iourip holding down bass duties (and adding some killer backing vocals), Rouzman smashing drums, Arsène tickling the keys, and even Kropol throwing in some trombone vibes for extra chaos. Yeah, trombone in punk rock—don’t knock it till you hear it. Now, onto the tracks. There’s “Mac Dollar,” which kicks off with this driving guitar riff that just grabs you by the collar. The whole song has this relentless pace, like you’re running from something but don’t know what. And then there’s Vérole’s voice cutting through like he’s screaming right at ya. Honestly, I remember this one because it’s got this catchy-as-hell hook that sticks in your head for days. You’ll find yourself humming it while brushing your teeth or whatever. Then there’s “Insurrection,” which hits different. This one feels darker, angrier—like they’re channeling all their frustrations about life in France back in the day. The drums are pounding, the guitars are snarling, and when everyone joins in on those backing vocals? Damn, it gives me chills every time. It’s one of those songs where you feel like you should be crowd-surfing somewhere, even if you’re just sitting alone in your room. Other standouts include “Fatigué D’Attendre” and “Les Jeux Sont Faits,” both packing enough punch to keep you hooked. But honestly, the whole album flows so well—it’s not just a collection of songs; it’s more like a snapshot of a specific moment in time. Like, you can almost picture them crammed into some tiny club in Paris, sweat dripping off the walls, everyone losing their minds. So yeah, Sous Les Pavés La Rage isn’t perfect, but that’s kinda the point. It’s rough around the edges, chaotic, and brimming with passion. Listening to it now, decades later, makes me wonder how many bands today would have the guts to make something this untamed. Or maybe we’ve just gotten soft. Either way, give this one a spin if you want music that feels alive instead of manufactured. Oh, and fun fact: apparently “sous les pavés, la plage” was a slogan during the May ’68 protests in France. Translates to “under the cobblestones, the beach.” Weirdly poetic, huh? Punk rockers quoting revolutionaries—it checks out.
