Album Review: New Directions In Music By Pat Thomas Valium Released in 1997 under Strange Ways Records, New Directions In Music By Pat Thomas Valium is a genre-bending journey through rock’s more adventurous corners. With styles ranging from Jazz-Rock to Psychedelic Rock and Experimental vibes, this German-born album feels like it doesn’t quite know what box to fit into—and that’s exactly why it works. Produced by Quintus (who also handles drums, percussion, mixing, and mastering duties), the record brings together an eclectic mix of musicians who seem hell-bent on breaking rules just for fun. One standout track is “Let’s Have Sex.” Yeah, you read that right. It’s not your typical love song; instead, it dives headfirst into raw energy with Alec Palao’s guitar riffs slicing through layers of saxophone courtesy of Erik Pearson. The vocals? They’re delivered with a swagger that toes the line between sleazy and sincere—a combo that somehow sticks. This tune lingers because it refuses to take itself too seriously while still delivering some serious groove. You can almost picture the band laughing as they recorded it, which makes it oddly endearing. Another track worth mentioning is “Because We’ve Ended As Lovers / Blackwater Side.” Here, the album shifts gears entirely, blending haunting piano melodies with Graham Connah’s organ work to create something deeply atmospheric. The dual-title structure hints at its layered complexity—part melancholic breakup ballad, part brooding instrumental odyssey. Saxophone solos drift in and out like ghosts, while Matt Royston’s violin adds a touch of eerie beauty. It’s one of those songs that sneaks up on you, leaving you replaying it just to catch all the details you missed the first time around. The credits alone tell you how much effort went into this thing. From Kurt Statham holding down bass and vocals to Pat Thomas himself adding bongo beats (yes, really), the whole project has a DIY charm that keeps things unpredictable. And let’s not forget Guy Slater, who mastered and edited the album, ensuring everything sounded cohesive despite its wild variety. What strikes me most about New Directions In Music By Pat Thomas Valium is how unapologetically weird it is. Sure, some tracks feel a bit rough around the edges, but that only adds to the charm. Listening to it feels like flipping through someone’s personal journal—messy, intimate, and full of surprises. Here’s the kicker: If you handed me this album without context, I’d never guess it came out in ’97. Its experimental spirit feels decades ahead of its time—or maybe completely out of time altogether. Either way, it’s a trip worth taking. Just don’t blame me if “Let’s Have Sex” gets stuck in your head for days.
