Ion Zlotea - Cobză

Review by Rolf B. Holte

Cobză by Ion Zlotea: A Folk Journey That Feels Like Home Let me tell you something about Cobză, the 1959 gem from Romania. This isn’t just another folk album—it’s a warm hug for your soul, wrapped in strings and tradition. It’s raw, it’s real, and honestly? It feels like sitting by a fire with your grandparents telling stories you’ll never forget. The record is led by Ion Zlotea himself on cobza (that small but mighty string instrument), backed up beautifully by Nicu Stănescu’s Orchestra de Muzică Populară. You can hear every note drip with authenticity, as if they were playing not just to entertain but to keep their culture alive. The production might feel a little dated—thanks, 1950s tech—but that only adds charm. Like an old photograph, its imperfections make it more human. Now let me zoom in on two tracks that stuck with me. First off, "Să-mi Cînți Cobzar Bătrîn" hits different. It starts slow, almost hesitant, like someone coaxing memories out of the past. Then BAM! The melody kicks in, and suddenly you’re dancing barefoot at some village wedding. I swear, this tune has a way of pulling at heartstrings without even trying too hard. Maybe it’s how Zlotea plucks those cobza strings—it’s playful yet kinda melancholic, like he knows life’s bittersweet truths but still chooses joy anyway. And then there’s “Hora Lui Zlotea.” Oh man, this one’s special. It’s got rhythm for days, the kind that makes your feet tap even when you try to sit still. There’s something magical about how the orchestra swells behind Zlotea’s lead—it’s celebratory but also grounded, like it belongs to the earth itself. Listening to it felt like being part of something bigger than myself, like joining hands in a circle where everyone’s welcome. Every time I hear it, I think of laughter under starry skies and plates piled high with sarmale. Simple joys, ya know? What really gets me though is how timeless these songs feel. Even though this album dropped back in ‘59, it doesn’t sound old—it sounds eternal. Like these tunes have been around forever and will be long after we’re gone. Weird thought, right? But hey, maybe that’s why folk music sticks around. It reminds us who we are, no matter what year it is. So yeah, Cobză isn’t perfect. Some parts crackle, others feel rough around the edges—but that’s exactly why it works. It’s honest. And honestly? After listening to this album, I kinda wish I could go back in time to thank Ion Zlotea personally. Or at least grab a drink with him and ask him to play a few more tunes. Final random thought: If albums had scents, this one would smell like freshly baked bread and pine trees. Just saying.
