James & Bobby Purify - Do Unto Me Everybody Needs Somebody

Review by Ponn Sabra

Back in '68, James & Bobby Purify dropped this gem of an album called Do Unto Me / Everybody Needs Somebody. If you’re into raw soul and funky grooves that feel like they’re straight outta the heart, then this one’s for you. Produced by Papa Don (who clearly knew what he was doing), it came out on Bell Records—a label that didn’t mess around when it came to putting good vibes into vinyl. Let me tell ya, there are two tracks here that just stick with you. First up is “Everybody Needs Somebody.” Man, oh man, this tune hits different. It’s got that classic soul vibe—gritty vocals, punchy horns, and a rhythm section so tight it feels like your chest might explode from joy. You can’t help but think about life while listening to it. Like, yeah, we all need somebody. Whether it's love or friendship or just someone who gets us—it’s real talk wrapped up in music. And Bobby Purify? His voice cracks through like sunlight breaking clouds. Feels personal every damn time. Then there’s “Do Unto Me,” which flips the script a bit. This track has more funk swagger, kinda sneaky and smooth at the same time. The bassline alone could make anyone nod their head without even realizing it. There’s something hypnotic about how the guitar stabs weave in and out—it pulls you closer, makes you wanna move. When James takes the lead, his delivery is pure fire. He sounds like he means every word, no gimmicks. It’s the kind of song where you forget everything else exists for three minutes and forty seconds because it owns you completely. What strikes me most about this record isn’t just the music itself—it’s the humanity dripping off each note. These guys weren’t chasing trends; they were pouring their souls into these songs. They probably didn’t have fancy studios or Auto-Tune back then, but honestly? That’s what makes it so damn special. You hear imperfections, little cracks in the voices, and it reminds you these dudes were human beings making art—not robots programmed to sound perfect. Here’s the kicker though: Listening to this album now feels almost surreal. In 2023, where everything’s hyper-polished and calculated, hearing something as unapologetically authentic as Do Unto Me / Everybody Needs Somebody feels like finding a handwritten letter in a world full of emails. It’s messy, heartfelt, and unforgettable. Makes you wonder if maybe we don’t need all those bells and whistles after all.

Could be classes as a mainstream soul of the time from Northern Soul, like Everlasting Love - The Love Affair, I wander how high these got in the charts. Thanks for uploading, never heard this before, very nice track, quality not quantity.

I bought this in the summer of 1968. Was amazed that it was never a massive hit. Haven’t heard it on the radio since. It has an ‘ Everlasting Love’ arrangement type feel
