Album Review: Django by Rico Herrera – A Hip-Hop Gem from Italy That’ll Make You Go “Huh?” Alright, let’s talk about Django by Rico Herrera. Released in 2016 under Medicine Records (Italy represent!), this little hip-hop nugget might not have set the world on fire, but it sure has its moments. And hey, when you’re a one-man show like Herrera—producer, creator, probably coffee-fetcher—it’s impressive how much personality he squeezes into just two tracks. Yeah, TWO. It’s short, sweet, and kinda leaves you wanting more, like pizza at 3 AM. First up is “Django Instrumental.” Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Instrumentals? Snooze fest!” But hold your horses, pal. This isn’t some lazy beat looped until eternity. Nope. Herrera layers sounds with precision, dropping jazzy guitar licks over a steady boom-bap rhythm that feels both nostalgic and fresh. The track builds slowly, teasing you with subtle changes that make you go, “Wait…did something just happen there?” By the end, you realize you’ve been nodding your head for five minutes straight. Sneaky bastard. Then we hit “Django” (the vocal version). Honestly, this is the one that sticks in my brain like gum on a hot sidewalk. Herrera doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel here—he keeps it simple, spitting bars over the same instrumental backbone. But man, his flow is smooth as melted mozzarella. There’s an effortless vibe to it, like he recorded this while lounging on a Vespa sipping espresso. He talks about life, struggles, dreams—the usual suspects—but with enough swagger to keep things interesting. Plus, the hook? Catchy as hell. You’ll hum it in the shower, trust me. So why does this tiny album stick out? Maybe because it’s unpretentious. Herrera didn’t aim for global domination; he made something small yet meaningful. Like graffiti on a forgotten wall, Django catches your eye even if you weren’t looking for it. Here’s the kicker though: after listening to these tracks, I couldn’t help but wonder…where’s the rest of the album? Did Rico run out of beats? Get distracted by pasta? Or maybe he knew perfection doesn’t need padding. Either way, Django proves less can be more—if done right. Now excuse me while I add this to my playlist titled “Stuff That Makes Me Feel Cool Without Trying Too Hard.”
