The Manhattans - A Million To One

Review by Natasha Jackson

A Million To One by The Manhattans: A Soulful Time Capsule That Still Hits Hard Let’s get straight to it—A Million To One is one of those albums that doesn’t just sit in your playlist; it lives there. Released back in ’72, this gem from The Manhattans straddles genres like R&B/Soul and Funk/Soul with the kind of smoothness only they could pull off. Labels like DeLuxe, London Records, and Columbia gave it legs, but trust me, its heart beats all on its own. Now, if you’re a sucker for tracks dripping with emotion and groove (and who isn’t?), two songs stand out big time: “Teen Liberation” and “I Can’t Stand For You To Leave Me.” “Teen Liberation” kicks things off with a vibe so funky, it feels like stepping into a disco where everyone knows your name. The bassline? Insanely tight. And those harmonies? They wrap around you like an old leather jacket—familiar yet exciting. It’s not just music; it’s permission to let loose without overthinking it. Every time I hear it, I picture some smoky club in the early '70s, people dancing like nobody's watching because, well, no one was. Then there’s “I Can’t Stand For You To Leave Me,” which hits different. Like, gut-punch-level different. This track has vocals so raw, you’d swear lead singer George Smith poured his entire soul into every note. There’s something about how he stretches out the word “leave” that makes you feel like you’ve been left too—even if you haven’t. It’s sticky sweet sorrow wrapped up in horns and keys, and honestly? It sticks with you long after the record stops spinning. The rest of the album keeps the energy alive with tracks like “Strange Old World,” “Blackbird,” and “Fever,” each bringing its own flavor to the table. Whether it’s the reflective tone of “One Life To Live” or the fiery passion of “Cry If You Wanna Cry,” there’s never a dull moment here. But what really gets me is how timeless this album feels. Sure, it came out decades ago, but listening to it now feels like flipping through an old photo album—you see pieces of yourself in these stories, even though they were written way before you existed. And hey, here’s the kicker: albums like A Million To One remind us why we still dig vinyl. Yeah, streaming’s cool and all, but can Spotify give you that crackle between tracks? Nah. So do yourself a favor: grab a copy, hit play, and let The Manhattans take you somewhere else entirely. Who knows? Maybe you’ll end up dancing in that smoky club right alongside them.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The Manhattans' album *A Million To One* from 1972 is like a time capsule of soulful vibes. It’s packed with tracks that blend R&B and funk, but here’s the kicker—some songs are repeated multiple times on the album. For example, "A Million To One" and "I Can’t Stand For You To Leave Me" show up more than once. Was it a creative choice or a quirky oversight? Either way, it gives fans extra helpings of those smooth grooves. Plus, it was released in both the US and UK under different labels, showing just how far their soulful sound reached.
