Jim Croce - Operator Thats Not The Way It Feels

Operator (That’s Not The Way It Feels): A Timeless Slice of Rock Magic Alright, picture this: it's 1972, bell-bottoms are still a thing, and Jim Croce drops Operator (That’s Not The Way It Feels). This album? A smooth ride through Country Rock, Classic Rock, Pop Rock, and Folk Rock—basically every kind of rock that doesn’t involve headbanging or leather pants. Released in the US, UK, Netherlands, and Australia via labels like Vertigo, Lifesong, and ABC Records, it’s got that universal charm that makes you go, “Yeah, I could vibe with this anywhere.” Now let’s dive into two tracks that stick to your brain like gum on a hot sidewalk. Operator (That’s Not The Way It Feels) The title track is an absolute gem. You know those songs where you’re not sure if you wanna cry or grab a beer? This is one of them. Jim lays down his heartbreak story about trying to call an ex but chickening out when he gets the operator instead. It’s relatable AF—haven’t we all had moments where we almost called someone just to hang up because, well, feelings are hard? Produced by Terry Cashman and Tommy West, the production feels intimate yet polished enough to sound radio-ready. And can we talk about Bruce Tergeson’s engineering skills for a sec? The mix lets Croce’s voice shine while keeping the instrumentation simple but effective—a twangy guitar here, some soft percussion there. It’s like musical comfort food without being cheesy. Oh, and fun fact: Jim wrote this himself. No ghostwriters, no algorithms spitting out lyrics based on TikTok trends. Just pure, unfiltered emotion from a dude who clearly knew how to turn pain into gold. Rapid Roy (The Stock Car Boy) If “Operator” tugs at your heartstrings, then “Rapid Roy” revs up your engine. This tune gives us a glimpse into the life of a stock car racer living life pedal-to-the-metal. There’s something oddly satisfying about hearing Croce sing about racing dirt tracks and chasing freedom. Maybe it’s the breezy melody or the carefree vibe—it’s like taking a joyride in a beat-up convertible with the wind messing up your hair. What makes this track memorable isn’t just its storytelling; it’s also insanely catchy. Seriously, don’t be surprised if you find yourself humming it during unrelated activities, like doing taxes or waiting in line at the DMV. Credit goes to Jim again for penning such a vivid narrative and making it feel alive. --- So yeah, Operator (That’s Not The Way It Feels) might’ve come out over five decades ago, but it holds up like a perfectly worn-in pair of jeans. Sure, the world has changed since ’72—hello smartphones, goodbye payphones—but the emotions packed into these tracks? Still hit home. And honestly, as much as I love modern music with its auto-tune and flashy beats, albums like this remind me why raw talent never goes out of style. Plus, listening to Jim Croce feels like chatting with an old friend who always knows what to say…even if they occasionally mumble their words. Final thought: If Jim were around today, I bet he’d have a killer podcast. Just saying.

Jim Croce's music is so timeless. His music has made such an impact on me as a person, even more so now that I am a husband and a father.

I'm 35 and started collecting vinyls and quickly obtained "Life and Times" and 2 copies of I Got a Name. "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song" was my wife's and my wedding song.

Just an amazing talent, it's really sad how early in life he died (and Maury). God bless you brother.

"If that's the way that you want it,
It's the way I want it more" Great line.

Thank God that he let Jim record this song before he died tragically. This is one of the best songs of the 1970's. I know many who can relate to this song.

“But tomorrow’s a dream away
Today has turned to dust.
Your silver tongue has turned to clay,
And your golden rule to rust”
Compare that with what passes for lyrics nowadays….
My dad called him a wordsmith..….…. Couldn’t say it better myself.
I just learned car wash blues, I think I’ll add this one for the next ex..

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Romans 10:13)
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. (Psalms 51:1-4)

I love this. One of my very favorite songs of Jim’s. Such a tragic loss when we lost him so young, I still remember being twelve years old at the time the sadness that overwhelmed me when I found out he had passed away. It was obvious this man felt what he was singing about, that sincerity is lacking with so many artists now. Had he lived I know there would have been so much more great music, but I’m grateful for the wonderful legacy he left us.
