Album Review: New York Minute Live At The Iridium 2013 by John Wetton And The Les Paul Trio Alright, let’s dive into this gem of an album. New York Minute Live At The Iridium 2013 is one of those records that sneaks up on you—released in 2015 but recorded back in 2013, it’s got a raw live energy that feels like you’re sitting right there in the room with John Wetton and his killer band. It’s not just another live album; it’s a love letter to rock, pop, and everything in between. The genres here are all over the place in the best way possible—Prog Rock, Soft Rock, AOR, Pop Rock—and somehow it all blends seamlessly. Wetton’s unmistakable voice takes center stage, backed by tight musicianship from the Les Paul Trio. You’ve got Lou Pallo shredding on guitar, Nikki Parrott holding down the basslines, Rodney Holmes tickling the ivories, and Lance McVickar making sure every note sounds crisp as hell. Now, onto the tracks. There’s plenty to unpack, but two songs stuck out for me personally: “Heat Of The Moment” and “Can’t Find My Way Home.” Let me tell ya why. First off, “Heat Of The Moment.” Yeah, yeah, we’ve all heard Asia’s original version a million times (probably while cruising down some highway), but hearing Wetton tackle it live gives it new life. His vocals are smoother than ever, almost like he’s telling you this story face-to-face instead of belting it out to a crowd. The band amps it up too—there’s this moment where the piano kicks in, and suddenly you realize how much depth they’ve added to what could’ve been a straightforward cover. It’s nostalgic yet fresh, if that makes sense. Then there’s “Can’t Find My Way Home,” which hits different live. This track has always been emotional for me, but Wetton’s take brings out its soulful side even more. His delivery feels vulnerable, like he’s lived through every word he’s singing. When the guitar solo comes in, it’s understated but perfect—no unnecessary fireworks, just pure feeling. Honestly, it gave me goosebumps. Like, whoa, okay, maybe I need a minute after that one. What I really dig about this album is how unpolished it feels compared to studio work. Don’t get me wrong—it’s still professional as heck—but there’s something special about hearing little imperfections, crowd noises, or Wetton cracking jokes between songs. It reminds you these guys aren’t robots; they’re humans having fun playing music together. Oh, quick shoutout to Michael Inns for the artwork and design. Super clean and fitting for the vibe of the record. And props to Nelson Onofre for the photos—they capture the intimacy of the performance without trying too hard. So yeah, wrapping this up… Listening to New York Minute Live At The Iridium 2013 feels like hanging out with old friends. It’s familiar but surprising at the same time. If I had to leave you with one random thought, it’d be this: Why don’t more artists release live albums anymore? Seriously, streaming playlists have nothing on the magic of hearing real people play real music in real time. Maybe grab a copy of this one—you won’t regret it.
