Album Review: Joy Is Gone From Our Hearts by Sloth (1997) Alright, let’s talk about Joy Is Gone From Our Hearts, the gnarly little gem from Sloth. Released in ‘97, this self-released noise-doom metal beast is not your typical rock album. It’s raw, it’s heavy, and honestly? It’s kinda unforgettable. Hailing from the US, Sloth didn’t bother with a big label—this thing came straight from their own hands, and you can feel that DIY grit all over it. Now, if I had to pick two tracks that stuck with me, it’d be “Human Torch Is Throwing Fireballs At You” and its sibling track, “Human Torch Fireballs You.” Yeah, those titles are wild, but they totally set the tone. These songs hit like a punch in the gut, with layers of sludgy riffs and this oppressive atmosphere that just doesn’t quit. The first one, “Human Torch Is Throwing Fireballs At You,” starts off slow, almost teasing you, before exploding into this chaotic wall of sound. It’s like being caught in a storm of fireballs yourself—no joke. And then there’s the follow-up track, which feels like the aftermath. It’s slower, darker, almost meditative in its heaviness. You’re left feeling like you’ve survived something… but at what cost? What makes these tracks stand out is how they balance absurdity with genuine emotion. Like, sure, the titles sound like something a 12-year-old would come up with during a comic book binge, but the music itself is dead serious. It’s doom metal with a twist of humor, and honestly, that combo works way better than it should. The whole album has this unpolished charm to it, like Sloth didn’t care about fitting into any scene—they just wanted to make something loud and honest. And yeah, maybe some parts are a bit rough around the edges, but that’s part of the appeal. It’s real. No fancy production tricks or trying too hard to impress anyone. Just a couple of dudes cranking out some seriously heavy tunes. So, here’s the thing: listening to Joy Is Gone From Our Hearts feels like finding an old mixtape in the back of your car. It’s not perfect, but it’s got character. And honestly, isn’t that what rock ‘n’ roll is all about? Oh, and one last thought—if Human Torch ever actually threw fireballs at me, I’d probably just ask Sloth to soundtrack the moment. They’d nail it.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a fun fact: The 1997 rock album *Joy Is Gone From Our Hearts* by Sloth has two tracks with hilariously similar titles—“Human Torch Is Throwing Fireballs At You” and “Human Torch Fireballs You.” It’s like they couldn’t decide which one sounded cooler, so they just kept both. Classic metal move, right?
