Runt - Acappella

Alright, so I’ve been spinning Acappella by Runt lately, and man, it’s a wild ride. You know how sometimes an album just kinda sneaks up on you? This one did that for me. It’s got this cool mix of pop and rock vibes but throws in all these experimental twists that keep you guessing. The label, Catsville, clearly gave Runt some room to play around because this thing feels like a mad scientist let loose in a studio. Let’s talk tracks real quick. First off, there’s “Lost Horizon.” I mean, come on—that opening grabs you right away. It starts with this haunting vocal line that feels like it’s floating in from another dimension. Then BAM, the drums kick in, and suddenly you’re not sure if you’re listening to a pop song or some kind of spaced-out rock opera. It’s catchy as hell though, which is probably why it stuck in my head for days. Like, I’d catch myself humming it while making coffee, which is always a good sign. Then there’s “Mighty Love.” Oh man, this one slaps. It’s got this driving rhythm and these harmonies that feel like they’re punching you in the chest—in a good way! There’s something about the energy here; it’s raw, unpolished, and full of grit. If you’re into music that makes you wanna move but also think, this track nails it. Plus, the lyrics are weirdly relatable—like, who hasn’t felt torn between wanting love and running away screaming? The rest of the album keeps things interesting too. Tracks like “Honest Work” and “Miracle In The Bazaar” have these quirky little moments where you can tell Runt was just messing around, seeing what sticks. And honestly, most of it does stick. Even quieter tunes like “Blue Orpheus” bring something fresh to the table. It’s not perfect—some parts feel a bit rough around the edges—but isn’t that part of the charm? What really gets me thinking, though, is how this album doesn’t fit neatly into any box. Is it pop? Sure. Rock? Definitely. Experimental? Absolutely. But more than anything, it feels human. Like someone sat down and said, “Screw it, let’s just make stuff we like.” That attitude shines through every track. So yeah, Acappella might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you dig music that takes risks and doesn’t take itself too seriously, give it a shot. Honestly, I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Makes me wonder what Runt would sound like live—probably chaotic, in the best way possible.

Haven't listened to this in years. I still remember every note.
I had read somewhere this was a tribute to Marvin Gaye upon his passing in 1984. Makes sense, when you hear its vocal interpretation. It's Todd doing Marvin Gaye.
