Album Review: Concerto Pour Flûte Et Orchestre En Ré Majeur / Concerto Pour Hautbois Et Orchestre En Ut Majeur Released in 1962 under the iconic Deutsche Grammophon label, this classical gem by Joseph Haydn is a masterclass in elegance and precision. Featuring Kurt Redel on flute (Side A) and Kurt Kalmus on oboe (Side B), with Hans Stadlmair leading the Orchestre De Chambre De Munich, it’s one of those albums that sneaks up on you—quietly brilliant but impossible to forget. Let’s talk about two tracks that stuck with me. First off, the Concerto Pour Flûte Et Orchestre En Ré Majeur’s third movement, “Rondo: Allegretto.” This piece has an infectious bounce to it, like watching sunlight dance across water. Redel’s flute playing feels effortless, almost playful, yet every note lands perfectly. The interplay between the soloist and the orchestra is so tight-knit; it’s like they’re having their own private conversation, and we’re lucky enough to eavesdrop. You don’t need to be a hardcore classical fan to appreciate how joyful this track feels—it’s just good vibes all around. Then there’s the second movement of the Concerto Pour Hautbois Et Orchestre En Ut Majeur, titled “Adagio.” If the first track was sunshine, this one’s twilight. Kurt Kalmus brings such warmth to his oboe performance here. It’s slow, reflective, and deeply emotional without ever feeling overwrought. There’s something about the way the strings swell behind him—it gives me chills every time. Honestly, if I had to pick a moment where everything clicks into place, it’d be right here. It reminds me why people still listen to Haydn after centuries—he knew how to write music that speaks straight to the soul. One thing worth mentioning is Eveline Hurard’s liner notes. They add real depth to the listening experience, giving context without bogging you down in jargon. And props to Hans Stadlmair for keeping the energy crisp throughout. He doesn’t let things get too stiff or formal, which can sometimes happen with chamber orchestras from this era. This album came out in France back in ’62, and even though it’s nearly six decades old now, it hasn’t aged a bit. Maybe that’s because Haydn’s compositions have this timeless quality, or maybe it’s just how well everyone involved nailed their parts. Either way, it’s impressive stuff. What strikes me most isn’t just the technical skill—it’s how human these performances feel. These musicians weren’t trying to reinvent the wheel; they were honoring the music while letting their personalities shine through. That balance is rare, especially in recordings from this period. Final thought? Listening to this record makes me wonder what Haydn would’ve thought of modern recording technology. Would he have been amazed? Confused? Or maybe he’d just nod approvingly and say, “Yeah, sounds about right.” Whatever the case, this album proves great music transcends time—and occasionally, it also makes you smile for no reason at all.

Born: 1732-03-31 (Rohrau, Austria) Born 31 march or 1st April, 1732. Died: 1809-09-05 (Vienna, Austria). Franz Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He brings the "sonata form" to a very high degree of improvement. His symphonies and his string quartets (forms of which he is considered "the father") have become highly inspirational style models. Haydn made a fundamental contribution to the development of chamber music; thanks to the numerous quartets, trios for piano, for strings and also with the unusual trios for baryton, viola and cello.
