Dark Lives Are A Pleasure Too EP: The French Techno Beast That Kicked Open Doors in 2004 Alright, let’s dive into this one. Southsoniks’ Dark Lives Are A Pleasure Too EP is the kind of record that doesn’t ask for your attention—it grabs it by the throat and shakes until you’re wide awake. Released on Calme Records back in ’04, this thing screams raw techno with an edge sharp enough to cut glass. France brought us croissants, but they also gave us this relentless slab of electronic fury. First off, can we talk about “Prelude To Dark”? Damn. This track hits like a freight train made of shadows and steel. It’s got this hypnotic bassline that feels like it’s crawling under your skin, while these eerie synths swirl around like smoke in a dimly lit club. You don’t just listen to this—you live it. Every beat lands with precision, every sound layered so tight it’s suffocating in the best way possible. If techno had a heartbeat, this would be it—cold, mechanical, yet somehow alive. Then there’s “Jam (Southsoniks Remix).” Oh man, this remix slaps HARD. It takes whatever energy the original had and cranks it up to eleven. The kicks are punishing, the hi-hats sizzle like frying bacon, and those synth stabs? Pure fire. I swear, this track could wake the dead if played loud enough—and honestly, who wouldn’t want to rise from their grave for something this good? There’s no messing around here; it’s straight-up business. When this drops in a set, you better believe everyone loses their damn minds. Now, quick shoutout to “Making Me (Live Edit)” too because, holy crap, the tension in this one builds like nothing else. But let’s keep it real—I’m still stuck on how “Prelude To Dark” and “Jam” hit harder than most albums do as a whole. So yeah, Southsoniks came out swinging with this EP, proving that even back in 2004, France wasn’t playing games when it came to pushing boundaries in techno. And here’s the kicker—this EP isn’t perfect. Some tracks feel repetitive after a while, but honestly? That repetition feels intentional, like they’re daring you to break free or lose yourself completely. Final thought: Listening to Dark Lives Are A Pleasure Too EP makes me wonder what happened to Southsoniks. Did they burn out? Get swallowed by the underground? Or maybe…they’re still out there somewhere, crafting beats so dark they can’t even see daylight anymore. Either way, this EP remains a brutal reminder of why techno will always have its claws sunk deep into our souls.

About Southsoniks

Born in 1976 in Revel (France). He lived 3 years in Africa (Burkina Faso). After finishing high school, he started studying economy, then computer engineering but only finished his sound engineering school in Switzerland where he actually lives. He first got involved in the electronic music movement in southern France in the early 90s. He is a free-lance sound engineer and works for Swiss French-speaking national radio. Active as a live-act since 1996, he plays in more than 40 events (single events, clubs, festivals, etc.) His concept revolves between a mix and an improvised performance. He has prepared loops and sound for each track on two portable computers and a couple of synthesizers, along with real-time effects, filter, etc. However, nothing is fixed as he construct the track differently each time and freely choose the next track which he mixes in, as a DJ would, while still being able to modify almost anything in real time, allowing a lot of flexibility. The purpose is to be able to be in tune with the crowd as much as possible during a show. His sound is influenced by electro, techno and tech house, deep house, underground disco, funk and new wave, jazz, African tribal sounds and rhythms. There is often in his tracks catchy melodies, sometimes mean, melancholic or new-wave alike, perfect contrast with the dynamism and the raging efficiency of the rhythm parts. Resumed by this philosophy food for the body and the soul
