Sun Dial - Reflecter

Review by Amanda Giesler

Reflecter by Sun Dial: A Psychedelic Punch to the Ears Alright, let’s get one thing straight—this album is wild. Like, "throw-your-shoes-at-the-wall-and-see-if-they-stick" wild. Reflecter by Sun Dial isn’t some polished pop gem; it’s a chaotic, genre-bending trip through alternative rock, shoegaze, and psychedelia that feels like someone shoved 1969 into a blender with a dash of indie rebellion. And honestly? That’s why I can’t stop thinking about it. First off, props to Gary Ramon for writing most of this madness. The dude clearly had no chill when he penned tracks like “Never Fade” and “Reflecter.” Let’s talk about “Never Fade” first—it kicks in like a punch to the gut but leaves you smiling. It’s got this hypnotic groove, thanks to Nigel Carpenter on bass, and Gary’s vocals feel raw, almost unhinged. You know those songs where you’re not sure if they’re trying to soothe you or freak you out? Yeah, that’s “Never Fade.” By the time the guitars swell up halfway through, you’re either headbanging or questioning your life choices. Either way, mission accomplished. Then there’s “Reflecter,” which might as well be six songs stitched together with duct tape. Seriously, how many versions of this track are on here? Radio edit? Alt Bass? Mix 1? Mix 2? It’s exhausting—and brilliant. The original version hits hard, all swirling psychedelia and fuzzy riffs that sound like they were recorded inside a kaleidoscope. But then you hit “Reflecter (Alt Bass),” and suddenly it’s heavier, darker, like Nigel decided to take over and turn it into a brooding monster. This song doesn’t just stick in your head—it moves in, redecorates, and starts charging rent. The production deserves a shout too. Brian O’Shaughnessy did his thing mixing tracks 2 to 8, and while it’s messy as hell, it works. Like, really works. There’s something satisfyingly imperfect about the whole thing—the drums are punchy but not polished, the vocals have this lo-fi grit, and the layers of sound crash into each other like waves during a storm. Clare Carnegie’s photography matches the vibe perfectly: trippy, surreal, and slightly unsettling. Now, here’s the kicker—this album came out in 1969. NINETEEN SIXTY-NINE. How does a record from back then still slap this hard today? Was Sun Dial ahead of their time, or were they just high as kites? Who cares! What matters is that Reflecter sounds fresh even now, standing tall against modern alt-rock and shoegaze acts who probably owe these guys royalties. So yeah, Reflecter is messy, loud, and kinda nuts—but damn, it’s unforgettable. Listening to it feels like stepping into a time machine that breaks down halfway through the ride, leaving you stranded in a weird, colorful void. And honestly? I wouldn’t want it any other way.

About Sun Dial

Sun Dial is the vehicle of guitarist and singer Gary Ramon, who started recording in the eighties as The Modern Art. He changed the name to Sun Dial when forming his live band. As Ramons cohorts came and went, Sun Dials style changed, yet it remained rooted in late sixties psychedelia and often focused on the guitar work. Many of the bands indie label releases came as collectable limited editions and were re-released over the years; they also recorded and released multiple version of several songs. The first Sun Dial album, Other Way Out (1990), copied the sound of the late sixties perfectly and is still celebrated as one of the best examples of neo-psychedelia. After that, Sun Dial recorded some simpler, harder, noisier tunes, which only saw a belated release on the Album Return Journey (1993). On the Overspill EP (1991) the band came up with dreamier sounds which connected them to the current indie trends. Shoegaze- and space rock-influences shaped the album Reflecter (1992), which also had a track based on a drumloop; Sun Dial further delved into electronics for the Fazer EP of the same year. They moved to Beggars Banquet and had their most commercial outing with Libertine (1993), built upon dance grooves and catchy rock riffs, yet not completely abondoning psychedelia. Acid Yantra (1995) was an attempt to return to the bands roots, yet it lacked the outstanding tunes and underground charm of their early records. Gary Ramon brought Sun Dial to a halt but started releasing records again with a new line-up in 2002.

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know that the album *Reflecter* by Sun Dial is a bit of a time traveler? It’s labeled as released in 1969, but its genres and styles—like Shoegaze and Neo-Psychedelia—are more aligned with the late '80s or early '90s. The record floats between decades, mixing retro vibes with futuristic sounds. Tracks like "Never Fade" and "Sunstroke" feel like they’re beaming in from another era entirely. Produced by the band itself, it’s got this raw, experimental edge—as if Gary Ramon and crew were just throwing ideas at the wall to see what stuck. Oh, and fun detail: bassist Nigel Carpenter even gets his own special shoutout with a remix titled “Reflecter (Nigel Bass).” It's like the album exists in its own little universe, blending past, present, and future all at once.

Bought this record in Rome in 1992. Listening to it makes me travel back to this period. Good ol' times. Sun dial is a major indie band. Grunge and shoegaze with ethereal voices and echoes. No compromise. Priority to electricity. Just sumptuous.

Super stuff. A re-write of 'Death Wish'.
1992. Better than every single album that came out of Seatle. Or America for that matter.
Better than Blur. Better than Oasis.
