Album Review: My Balls by Softmal Alright, let’s talk about My Balls by Softmal. It’s one of those albums that just kinda sneaks up on you. Released back in 2012 under the Spanish label Bully Beatz, this thing is pure Minimal Techno vibes. If you’re into Electronic music but hate all the over-the-top stuff, this is your jam. It’s stripped-down, raw, and somehow still hits hard. The title track, “My Balls,” is where it all starts. Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect with a name like that—like, is this some kind of joke? But nah, it’s legit. The beat kicks in slow, almost teasing you, and then BAM, it locks into this hypnotic groove. There’s not much going on—just a few synths and a steady kick drum—but that’s the beauty of it. You can literally zone out to this for hours. I remember listening to it late at night when I couldn’t sleep, and it felt like the music was just… holding my hand or something. Weird, right? But yeah, that’s the vibe. Then there’s “My Balls (Dani Sbert Remix).” This one flips the script a bit. Dani Sbert takes the original and cranks up the energy. It’s still Minimal Techno, but there’s more texture and movement. The bassline feels grittier, like it’s got an attitude problem, and the high-end tweaks give it this futuristic edge. Every time I hear it, I picture some underground club in Barcelona, sweaty dancers losing their minds. Like, you can’t NOT move to this. It’s impossible. What’s wild about My Balls is how simple it is. No crazy drops, no vocals, no big dramatic moments. Just two tracks that do exactly what they need to do. It’s almost like Softmal was like, “Yo, let’s make something people will actually feel instead of just showing off.” And they nailed it. Honestly, this album makes me think about how less really can be more. It’s not trying to be anything it’s not, and that’s refreshing in a world where everyone’s trying to blow your head off with sound. Also, naming an album My Balls is either genius or totally ridiculous. Still not sure which, but hey, it works. Final thought: if you ever find yourself needing a soundtrack for staring at a wall or pretending you’re in a cyberpunk movie, this is your go-to. Oh, and maybe don’t play it around your grandma unless she’s cool with techno.
