Album Review: Auf Schmetternde Töne BWV 206 & Schleicht Spielende Wellen BWV 207a by J.S. Bach If you’re into Baroque music—or even if you’re just dipping your toes into classical stuff—this album is a gem worth checking out. Released in 1991 under Sony Music (yep, Austria was killin’ it back then), this recording brings together some of Bach’s lesser-known cantatas written for August III, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland. And trust me, it's got all the drama, flair, and intricate beauty that makes Bach so timeless. The lineup here is seriously stacked: Ruth Ziesak on soprano, Michael Chance handling alto, Christoph Prégardien rocking tenor duties, and Peter Kooy bringing the bass vibes. Throw in Frieder Bernius conducting the Kammerchor Stuttgart with Concerto Köln backing them up, and you’ve got yourself one heck of a team. It’s like assembling the Avengers but for Baroque music nerds. Now, let’s talk tracks. Two pieces really stuck with me after listening to this album—a couple times, okay fine, maybe five—but who’s counting? First off, there’s “Auf, Schmetternde Töne” from Cantata BWV 207a. Man, those opening trumpet blasts? Instant goosebumps. The whole thing feels celebratory, like someone just handed you a glass of champagne at a royal banquet. Christoph Prégardien shines here; his voice has this warm, golden tone that cuts through the orchestra without ever feeling over-the-top. There’s something about how he delivers the line “Augustus’ Namenstages Schimmer” that makes you sit up straighter—it’s regal yet human, which is kinda hard to pull off. You can almost picture the courtiers nodding along while secretly scheming behind their fans. Then there’s “Jede Woge Meiner Wellen,” an aria from Cantata BWV 206. This track is pure magic. Michael Chance’s countertenor floats above the strings like mist over water. Honestly, I had to rewind this one because it sneaks up on you—it starts soft, almost shy, but builds into this lush, emotional wave. The interplay between the vocals and the instruments feels like a conversation, as if the river itself is singing back to him. By the end, I was half-convinced I could hear actual waves lapping against the shore. Weird? Maybe. Beautiful? Absolutely. What strikes me most about this album isn’t just its technical brilliance—it’s how alive everything sounds. Like, yeah, these cantatas were written centuries ago, but they don’t feel dusty or distant here. Every note bursts with energy, every phrase drips with personality. Even the recitatives, which can sometimes drag in other recordings, are sharp and engaging thanks to the vocalists’ commitment. Here’s the kicker though: listening to this made me realize how much fun Bach must’ve had writing this stuff. Sure, he was churning out church music left and right, but these cantatas? They’re practically party anthems for kings! Who knew Bach could throw such a vibe? So, whether you’re a die-hard Bach fan or just curious about what Baroque music can do when done right, give this album a spin. Just don’t blame me if you start randomly humming trumpets during your morning coffee.

About JS Bach Ziesak, Chance, Prégardien, Kooy, Kammerchor Stuttgart, Concerto Köln, Frieder Bernius

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany. A prolific German composer and organist, his sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra and solo instruments drew together the strands of the baroque genre and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he introduced no new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, a control of harmonic and motivic organisation from the smallest to the largest scales, and the adaptation of rhythms and textures from abroad, particularly Italy and France. Many people consider him to be the greatest Baroque composer, and one of the greatest composers of all time. Revered for their intellectual depth, technical command and artistic beauty, J.S. Bach's works include the Brandenburg concertos, the keyboard suites and partitas, the Mass in B Minor, the St. Matthew Passion, The Musical Offering, The Art of Fugue and a large number of cantatas, of which about 220 survive. He died on July 28, 1750. Some of his sons also became composers - , , and .
