Judy Garland Sings Lionel Bart’s Maggie May: A Hidden Gem from 1964 Alright, let’s talk about this little treasure—Judy Garland Sings Lionel Bart’s Maggie May. Released in 1964 on Capitol Records, it’s one of those albums that doesn’t scream for attention but sneaks up on you when you least expect it. With its mix of Stage & Screen vibes and classic Pop charm, it feels like stepping into a smoky London cabaret where Judy’s voice wraps around you like an old scarf. Cozy? You bet. The album’s got five tracks, all penned by Lionel Bart (yeah, the guy behind Oliver!), and while they’re all solid, two really stuck with me: “Maggie May” and “It’s Yourself.” Let me tell ya why. First off, “Maggie May.” Now, I know what you’re thinking—Rod Stewart did a version years later that became way more famous. But Judy’s take is… different. It’s less rock ‘n’ roll swagger and more heartfelt storytelling. Her voice cracks just enough to make you feel every word, like she’s sitting right there sharing something deeply personal. There’s no flashy production or big band backing her up here—it’s just Judy doing what she does best: making lyrics sound like they were written just for her. By the second verse, I was hooked. Then there’s “It’s Yourself.” This one sneaks up on you. At first listen, it feels kinda simple, almost too sweet. But give it another spin, and suddenly you realize how clever the lyrics are. Judy delivers them with this warm sincerity that makes you stop whatever you’re doing and pay attention. The message—about self-love and owning who you are—is timeless. Honestly, if this track came out today, TikTok would eat it up. Like, imagine influencers using it as their “morning motivation” soundtrack. Totally works. What strikes me most about this album is how intimate it feels. It’s not trying to be some grand theatrical masterpiece; instead, it’s Judy having a quiet moment with Lionel Bart’s songs. And honestly, isn’t that refreshing? In a world full of overproduced pop anthems, sometimes you just need someone singing straight to your soul. Oh, and here’s a random thought—I wonder if Lionel Bart ever imagined his tunes would end up being performed by Judy freaking Garland. Like, dude must’ve been pinching himself. Imagine writing songs for Oliver Twist one day and then getting Judy Garland to belt them out the next. Life’s weird like that. So yeah, Sings Lionel Bart’s Maggie May might not be Judy’s most iconic work, but it’s definitely worth a listen. Especially if you’re into music that tells stories without needing all the bells and whistles. Stick it on during a rainy afternoon, pour yourself a cuppa tea, and let Judy do the rest. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

Sadly, this was Judy Garland's last studio commercial recordings that she recorded in late September and early October. This was just before her two sell-out performances in November with her daughter Liza Minnelli at the London palladium! However, Judy did make one more studio recording in March 1967 for the soundtrack of the film "valley of the Dolls" that she was to star in ( which she wasn't able to complete). This recording "I'll plant my own tree" has never ever been released!??
