Review by Demetrius Navarro

Album Review: Lontano by Samora – A Dreamy Escape into Electronic Soundscapes If you’ve ever found yourself zoning out to the hum of waves crashing or the rhythmic pulse of city lights at 3 AM, Lontano by Samora might just feel like it was made for you. Released back in 2014 on Tranquillo Records (because, yeah, that’s exactly what this album feels like—tranquil), this Irish gem blends ambient, downtempo, and club/dance vibes so seamlessly that you’ll forget where one style ends and another begins. Let’s talk about two tracks that stuck with me long after I hit pause. First up is “Oceana.” Man, this track is a vibe. It opens with these soft, almost underwater-like tones, and then—boom—it pulls you under. The synths swell gently, like tides lapping at your feet, but there’s also this subtle beat pushing forward. You can practically see the horizon stretching out endlessly. For some reason, it reminds me of those late-night drives when everything feels too big and too small all at once. Like, whoa, life is weirdly beautiful, isn’t it? Then there’s “Mare Aperto,” which honestly feels like floating face-up in an endless ocean. This one doesn’t have vocals, but it doesn’t need them. The layers build slowly, pulling you deeper until you’re completely lost in its current. There’s something haunting yet comforting about how Enrico Marani crafts these sounds. By the end, you don’t wanna leave—it’s like being wrapped in a warm blanket that smells faintly of saltwater and dreams. Now, shoutout to Steve Kilbey, whose vocals on tracks 2 (“Lontano”) and 6 (“The Dream”) add this dreamlike texture to the mix. His voice is smooth as hell, kinda like honey dripping over toast, but with a touch of mystery. And props to Valeria Pisi for the cover art and photography—it’s simple, but it matches the mood perfectly. That Anodyne design team? Nailing it. What makes Lontano stand out isn’t just its technical brilliance; it’s the way it makes you feel. Listening to it feels less like hearing music and more like stepping into someone else’s quiet, introspective world. Every note seems intentional, every silence meaningful. It’s not trying too hard to impress—it just does. Here’s the thing: albums like this remind me why we listen to music in the first place. Sure, it’s fun to blast bangers and sing along off-key, but sometimes you need something that sits quietly beside you while you figure stuff out. Or maybe while you’re pretending to figure stuff out. Either way, Lontano gets it. Random thought: if this album were a person, I’d totally want to grab coffee with it. Just saying.
