The Apes - The Fugue In The Fog

Review by Paul Maiorana

The Fugue In The Fog by The Apes: A Chaotic, Raw Gem You Didn’t Know You Needed Alright, so here’s the deal—The Fugue In The Fog by The Apes is one of those albums that feels like it crawled out of a smoky basement in 2001 and just gets you. It’s punky, kinda indie, with this weird experimental edge that makes it feel both messy and intentional at the same time. Like, these dudes weren’t trying to be perfect—they were just trying to make something wild. And honestly? They nailed it. Let’s talk about the vibe for a sec. This thing runs on garage rock energy but throws curveballs with some trippy organ sounds (props to Erick Jackson for pulling double duty on bass AND organ) and Paul Weil’s vocals, which are somewhere between shouting-at-your-friends-in-a-bar and whispering-secrets-you-don’t-want-anyone-else-to-hear. The production has this raw grit to it—Jeff Schmid not only played drums but also engineered the whole thing, so yeah, he was basically running the show behind the scenes. Hats off to Alan Douches too for mastering; the sound punches hard without losing its rough-around-the-edges charm. Now let me zoom in on two tracks that stuck with me because, well, they’re unforgettable. First up: "Mountain of Steel." Man, this song hits different. From the opening riff, it’s clear you’re stepping into some post-apocalyptic biker movie soundtrack territory. The guitars churn away while Paul’s voice growls over the chaos, singing about power, control, or maybe just straight-up rebellion—I dunno, I wasn’t paying attention to the lyrics as much as how the whole thing made my chest vibrate. It’s heavy, man. Like, “turn-it-up-so-loud-your-neighbors-hate-you” heavy. But there’s also this sneaky groove underneath all the noise that keeps dragging you back in. Every time I hear it, I wanna grab a leather jacket and go cause trouble, even though I’d probably just end up spilling coffee on myself instead. Then there’s "Apes Salute," which kicks things off with this swagger that screams, “Yeah, we’re The Apes, and we don’t give a damn what you think.” It’s short, punchy, and full of attitude, like a musical middle finger to anyone expecting something polished. There’s this hypnotic rhythm going on—like your brain gets locked into it and can’t escape—and then BAM, it ends before you’re ready. That’s kinda their M.O., though. These songs don’t linger too long; they hit hard and move on. It’s refreshing, honestly. One thing I gotta mention is how cohesive yet unpredictable this album feels. Tracks like “Into the Woods” and “Land of Ruin” keep the mood dark and brooding, while others like “Smile Program” throw in quirky twists that catch you off guard. You never quite know what’s coming next, and that’s part of the fun. Oh, and kudos to whoever designed the artwork—it matches the chaotic brilliance of the music perfectly. So yeah, The Fugue In The Fog isn’t gonna win any Grammys or whatever, but who cares? This album doesn’t need awards to prove its worth. What it does have is guts, creativity, and a willingness to break rules. Listening to it feels like hanging out with a bunch of misfits who somehow stumbled onto genius. And hey, here’s a random thought to leave you with: If aliens ever landed and asked us to explain human music, I’d hand them this album first. Not because it’s perfect—but because it’s real.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a fun fact: The album *The Fugue In The Fog* by The Apes is like a chaotic yet creative mashup of punk, indie rock, and experimental sounds. What makes it even cooler? Erick Jackson pulled double duty on bass *and* organ, while Jeff Schmid not only played drums but also helped engineer the record. It’s got this raw, garage-rock vibe that feels like it was made in a haze of creativity—fitting for an album with "fog" in the title. Oh, and if you’re wondering about the tracklist, good luck keeping track—they repeat some song titles but tweak them slightly, just to keep you on your toes.

2018--Today I found this album in a thrift store for a dollar...Seems as though it had been unwrapped but never actually cracked out of the plastic cradle in the CD case. I'll entertain an unbiased play through...Who knows?? Maybe it'll be a gem? Maybe not?

Though the complete lack of use in its physical form, lack of an apparent follow up release, paired with the level of difficulty when tasked to find a relevant result when the band's name is searched through Google and YouTube does not lead me to believe great things are contained within...Kinda prematurely skews the whole "unbiased" portion of my attempt lol.
