The Opposition - Breaking The Silence

Breaking The Silence by The Opposition: A Sonic Time Capsule That’s Hard to Shake Off Alright, let’s dive into Breaking The Silence, the 2017 release from France’s very own The Opposition. If you’re into genres like Pop/Rock or Rock (duh) but also dig styles ranging from Alternative/Indie Rock to New Wave and Post-Punk with a sprinkle of Art Rock, this album is basically your musical Swiss Army knife. It's got layers, quirks, and just enough edge to keep things interesting without tipping over into "pretentious art school project" territory. Now, before we get too deep, let’s talk about two tracks that really stuck in my brain like gum on a hot sidewalk: “Breaking The Silence” (the title track, naturally) and “She Said.” First up, “Breaking The Silence.” This one hits hard right outta the gate—it’s moody, atmospheric, and feels like walking through an abandoned warehouse at midnight while someone whispers cryptic poetry in your ear. Mark Long’s vocals are raw yet polished enough to not sound try-hard, which is harder than it looks when you're aiming for that whole brooding artist vibe. And can we take a moment for Marcus Bell? Dude handles both bass AND keyboards like he was born multitasking. There’s something hypnotic about how the song builds tension without ever fully exploding—it leaves you hanging, kinda like waiting for Wi-Fi to reconnect during peak hours. Frustrating? Sure. But oddly satisfying? Absolutely. Then there’s “She Said,” which flips the script entirely. Where “Breaking The Silence” leans introspective and shadowy, this track bursts open with energy and wit. Picture sipping coffee on a rainy Paris morning—yeah, cliché as hell, but stay with me here. The guitar work by Mark Long has this jangly charm that makes you wanna tap your feet even if you’re sitting alone in sweatpants. Lyrically, it’s sharp and playful, almost like eavesdropping on a conversation between two people who clearly have history but aren’t quite sure what to do with it. Ralph Hall’s drumming deserves props too; it’s punchy without stealing the spotlight, kinda like the best friend who knows exactly when to crack a joke and when to shut up. The rest of the album follows suit—tracks like “Moving Targets” and “War Games” bring their own flavor to the table, keeping listeners guessing without losing cohesion. Plus, kudos to Kenny Jones for pulling double duty as engineer and producer because, honestly, this thing sounds tight. Hats off to André Perriat for mastering duties too; every note feels intentional, like they knew precisely where to place each sonic breadcrumb. Oh, and shoutout to Flight23 Design for the artwork—it’s sleek, minimalistic, and matches the vibe perfectly. No complaints there. But here’s the kicker: listening to Breaking The Silence feels less like hearing an album and more like stumbling across someone’s diary. You catch glimpses of vulnerability, defiance, nostalgia, and maybe even a touch of existential dread. It’s messy in all the right ways, like life itself. So yeah, give this record a spin if you’re tired of cookie-cutter pop-rock albums that feel like they were churned out by robots programmed to maximize Spotify streams. Just don’t blame me if “Breaking The Silence” ends up haunting your dreams—or your playlists—for weeks afterward. And hey, fun fact: Did you know Mark Hamilton did the illustrations? Makes sense, though. Only someone who understands visual storytelling could capture the essence of these songs so well. Or maybe I’m reading too much into it. Either way, solid effort, team. Final thought: Listening to this album made me realize something profound—rock music isn’t dead; it’s just chilling in France, sipping wine, and plotting its comeback. Cheers to that.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool fact: The album *Breaking The Silence* by The Opposition is like a musical patchwork quilt. It blends genres like Pop/Rock, Alternative/Indie Rock, and even Art Rock, all stitched together with influences from New Wave and Post-Punk. Released in 2017 in France, it’s got layers of talent behind it—Mark Long wrote the lyrics, played guitar, *and* sang, while Marcus Bell handled both bass and keyboards. Even more interesting? The mastering process involved not one but two people: André Perriat and Kenny Jones. Oh, and fun detail—the track "Black And White" appears twice on the album, but with slightly different stylings each time. Small quirks like that make this record feel alive.

The Opposition family is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Mark Long. Despite his fight, despite many projects for the band, the disease was stronger. Four days ago, Mark himself published the story of "Very Little Glory" on this page, a strange coincidence to talk about the history of this song which was the first and probably one of the most appreciated.
