Black Grape - In The Name Of The Father

In The Name Of The Father by Black Grape: A Wild Ride Through Genres and Grit Let’s get one thing straight—Black Grape’s In The Name Of The Father isn’t your run-of-the-mill album. Released in '95, this record is like a chaotic house party where rock, hip hop, funk, soul, and Britpop all crash together on the dance floor. It’s messy, it’s bold, and honestly? That’s what makes it unforgettable. The opening track, "Fat Neck," hits you like a slap to the face—but in a good way. Shaun Ryder (yeah, that dude from Happy Mondays) spits out lyrics with his signature swagger while a groovy bassline slinks around behind him. There’s something about how raw and unfiltered it feels; no polish, no pretense, just pure attitude. You can almost picture Shaun leaning against a graffiti-covered wall somewhere in Manchester as he delivers lines like they’re straight off the streets. This song sticks because it doesn’t try too hard—it just is. Plus, who could forget that chorus? Catchy as hell, man. Then there's "Kelly's Heroes." Oh, this one’s wild. With its ragga-infused beat and Michael Hutchence (yes, that Michael Hutchence of INXS fame) lending vocals, it’s got this weird cross-genre magic happening. Imagine sipping cheap cider at a festival while some bloke next to you starts breakdancing—that’s “Kelly’s Heroes” in audio form. The mix of Hutchence’s smooth delivery and Ryder’s rough-around-the-edges flow creates this push-and-pull dynamic that keeps you hooked. And those horns? Chef’s kiss. What really ties the whole album together is its refusal to sit still. One minute you're vibin’ to synth-heavy alt-dance bangers, the next you're knee-deep in funky riffs or introspective Britpop vibes. Produced by heavyweights like Danny Saber and Stephen Lironi, the soundscapes shift constantly, keeping listeners guessing. Even Johnny Marr pops up for a feature, adding his guitar wizardry to tracks like "Reverend Black Grape." Dude knows how to sprinkle stardust when needed. But here’s the kicker—it’s not perfect. Some songs feel overly experimental, veering into territory that might leave you scratching your head. Tracks like “In The Name Of The Father (60:00 Loop)” are basically just... well, loops. Repetitive? For sure. But maybe that’s part of the charm. Like life itself, the album refuses to conform to expectations. Looking back now, In The Name Of The Father feels less like an album and more like a snapshot of mid-'90s madness. It captures a time when genres were blending faster than anyone could keep up, and artists weren’t afraid to take risks—even if they didn’t always land. Sure, it’s flawed, but so are most things worth remembering. So yeah, give it a spin. Just don’t expect perfection. Expect chaos, creativity, and a few moments that’ll stick with you long after the needle lifts off the vinyl. Or hey, maybe don’t think about it too much. Sometimes the best music is the kind you feel rather than analyze. And honestly? If you walk away humming “Fat Neck,” mission accomplished.

About Black Grape

Black Grape was started by vocalist/bandleader and dancer of after the dissolution of that group in 1993. Shaun and Bez added and , both of the hip hop group (who were associated with Hulme/Manchester's baggy movement), as second vocalist/rapper and drummer, respectively, and also guitarist from the baggy/madchester/indie-dance group . Gluing the sound together was , a talented and prolific producer/remixer/multi-instrumentalist from Los Angeles, California. The combination of this supergroup of musicians essentially assured that resultant sound would fuse together the drugged- and thugged-out baggy attitude of the Mondays with a denser, brighter electronic and hip hop production style, and very well-produced rhythm tracks. Sonically, Black Grape emerged fully formed: harder-edged and brasher altogether than the Happy Mondays; elements of funk, hip hop, electronic, and soul, all of which were present in the previous group's music (but to a lesser extent) became far more saturated and less understated in the new group's style. One British music journalist of the time rather enthusiastically described Black Grape's debut album as "the party Prince was describing in the song '1999'."

Loved this remix better than the original. Back in the 90s I first heard this in my car and the "Coming from the side" came out of the front speakers and "coming from the back" from the back speakers. Brilliant mix!
