Review by Paul van Zyl

Cameristico by Riccardo Tesi: A Musical Journey That Feels Like Home (and a Little Bit of Elsewhere) Let’s get one thing straight—Riccardo Tesi’s Cameristico isn’t your run-of-the-mill classical or folk album. Released in 2012 under Italy’s Visage Music label, this record is like that quirky cousin who shows up at family gatherings with stories from places you’ve never been but suddenly want to visit. It blends genres so effortlessly—classical, European vibes, folk, world music, and even a touch of country—that it feels less like an album and more like a passport stamped with emotions. Now, let me tell ya about two tracks that stuck to my brain like gum on a summer sidewalk: “Taranta Samurai” and “Istanbul: Istanbul.” “Taranta Samurai” kicks things off with this wild energy that's part frenzied dance party, part ancient ritual. You can almost picture some dusty piazza in southern Italy, where everyone's spinning around like they're possessed by something mystical yet totally fun. The rhythm grabs you by the collar and says, “Hey, pay attention!” And just when you think you’ve got it figured out, there’s this unexpected twist—a melody so delicate it feels like catching snowflakes on your tongue. Honestly? I couldn’t stop humming it for days. Then there’s “Istanbul: Istanbul,” which hits differently. This track feels like wandering through a bustling bazaar, all vibrant colors and chaotic beauty. There’s this haunting quality to it, like the city itself is whispering secrets directly into your ear. Every note seems to stretch out, lingering just long enough to make you wonder what comes next. By the time it fades away, you’re left feeling both full and hungry for more—like after eating really good baklava. The rest of the album keeps the magic alive too. Tracks like “Mazurkazione” bring in these elegant, toe-tapping grooves that remind you why folk music has survived centuries. Meanwhile, “Praga La Notte” feels like midnight musings in a dimly lit café somewhere in Prague, complete with smoky air and existential thoughts. What makes Cameristico special isn’t just its mix of styles—it’s how Riccardo Tesi manages to bottle up little slices of life and pour them into each song. Listening to it feels like flipping through an old photo album where every snapshot tells a story. Sure, some parts might feel raw or unpolished, but that’s what gives it charm. Here’s the kicker though: halfway through writing this review, I realized I’d been listening to the album on repeat without even noticing. Maybe that’s the true test of great music—it sneaks up on you, wraps itself around your day, and before you know it, you’re hooked. Or maybe I’m just easily impressed. Either way, Cameristico is worth a listen if you’re looking for something that sounds like Italy, Istanbul, and everywhere in between—all rolled into one delightful mess. Oh, and here’s a random thought to leave you with: If albums could cook dinner, this one would probably serve spaghetti carbonara with a side of Turkish delight. Y’know, just saying.
