Tom And The Tempest's - Its Over Now

Review by Stephen Whitehead

Tom and The Tempest’s It’s Over Now – A Raw, Ragged Gem from 1964 That Still Kicks Alright, let’s get one thing straight: this ain’t your polished, overproduced rock album. Nope. Tom and The Tempest’s It’s Over Now is the kind of record that feels like it was recorded in someone’s garage—oh wait, it probably was. Released back in ’64 on Alco Records, this slice of American garage rock hits hard where it counts: raw energy, unfiltered emotion, and just enough grit to make you wanna crank up the volume. Now, I gotta be honest here—I didn’t expect much when I first slapped this baby on the turntable. But then came the title track, “It’s Over Now.” Holy smokes, does this song pack a punch! It’s got that driving beat, crunchy guitars, and Tom’s vocals sounding equal parts pissed off and heartbroken. You can practically hear him shrugging his shoulders while singing, like he’s trying to convince himself more than anyone else that yeah, it really IS over now. There’s something about the way the drums hammer away in the background—it’s not perfect, but man, it works. Feels real. Feels human. And isn’t that what rock ‘n’ roll is supposed to be? Then there’s “Play It Cool,” which flips the mood entirely. This tune sneaks up on you with its swaggering rhythm and cocky attitude. It’s less breakup anthem, more “I’m too cool for all this drama” strut down Main Street. The guitar riffs are sharp enough to cut glass, and the bassline? Don’t even get me started. It grooves so hard, you might find yourself nodding along before you realize you’re vibing to a 60-year-old track. I mean, who DOESN’T love a little sass mixed with their sorrow? The rest of the album holds its own, but these two tracks stick out like mismatched socks at a formal dinner—they don’t belong, yet somehow they steal the show. Sure, some parts sound rough around the edges (hello, we ARE talking about garage rock), but that’s part of the charm. These guys weren’t aiming for perfection; they were chasing passion. And damn if they didn’t catch it. So yeah, It’s Over Now may not have set the world on fire back in ’64, but it’s aged better than most things from that era (looking at you, polyester). Listening to it today feels like finding an old Polaroid in your grandparents’ attic—a little faded, sure, but full of character and stories waiting to be told. Final thought? If aliens ever invade Earth and demand proof of humanity’s artistic soul, toss them this album. They’ll either love us or vaporize us instantly. Either way, mission accomplished.

Their music has a bit of the early Beatles sound to it. They way they were dressed just like the Beatles they were wearing collarless jackets just the way the Beatles were photographed. When "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" was issued as a single, and the Beatles were photographed with those type of jackets. I only saw groups at that time wearing collarless jackets, but I never saw people wear them. This group sounds fantastic like other groups they were trying to adopt the British Beat sound. Because that's what was in now.

Tom Fortner, a really great young man whom I went to school with a Belmont High in Dayton, Ohio in the early '60's. We both sought bigger and better experiences in life through show biz careers...Tom in music, and me as a radio DJ. Tom, if you should happen to see this, I hope your life today is happy and fulfilling. I remember when I MC'ed a showing of "A Hard Days Night" at a Dayton theater, with your band on stage between showings! Great memories.
