Kiss Of Light Shine: BeBop Deluxe’s Wild Ride Through Space and Sound Man, Kiss Of Light Shine by BeBop Deluxe is one of those albums that just grabs you by the brain and shakes it till your thoughts are scrambled eggs. Released in '77 under labels like Harvest and EMI Electrola GmbH, this thing screams Experimental Rock with a side order of Art Rock swagger. It's got Bill Nelson pulling double duty as producer and songwriter, backed up by John Leckie (yeah, that John Leckie) on production duties too. The whole thing feels like an intergalactic road trip through soundscapes no one else was brave enough to explore at the time. Now, let me tell ya about two tracks that stuck to my soul like gum on a hot sidewalk: “Shine” and “Kiss Of Light.” First off, “Shine” hits you right outta nowhere. You think it’s gonna be all soft and dreamy—like some kinda cosmic lullaby—but nah, dude. About thirty seconds in, the guitars start swirling around like they’re trying to escape gravity itself. And then there’s Nelson’s voice—it’s not so much singing as it is floating above everything else, whispering secrets only he knows. I swear, every time I hear this track, I feel like I’ve been sucked into some alternate universe where rock music actually has teeth again. Then there’s “Kiss Of Light,” which...okay, honestly? This song almost broke me. Not because it’s sad or anything—well, maybe a little—but because it’s so damn beautiful. The way the melody builds up, layer after layer, until it feels like the sky itself might crack open and spill stars everywhere. There’s this moment near the end where the rhythm shifts ever so slightly, and suddenly you realize you’ve been holding your breath for like two minutes straight. That’s how powerful this tune is. It doesn’t just play; it lives inside you, man. What gets me most about this album is how fearless it feels. Back in ‘77, when disco was king and punk was starting to throw punches, BeBop Deluxe went ahead and made something completely different. They didn’t care if people got it or not—and honestly, I don’t think they wanted everyone to “get it.” This record wasn’t meant for casual listeners sipping coffee at home. No, this was for the weirdos, the misfits, the ones who looked up at night wondering if aliens were real. And here’s the kicker: even though it came out over forty years ago, Kiss Of Light Shine still sounds fresh today. Like, absurdly fresh. Maybe it’s because we’re living in a world obsessed with nostalgia—or maybe it’s proof that true art never really ages. Either way, listening to this album now feels less like revisiting history and more like discovering a secret message from the future. So yeah, do yourself a favor and give this baby a spin. Just don’t blame me if it messes with your head. Oh, and hey—if anyone asks why you’re zoning out staring at the ceiling while humming unintelligible lyrics…just say it’s research. Trust me, it totally counts.

British band formed by in 1972 - the musically restless Be Bop Deluxe never actually played Be-Bop music, and dabbled instead with genres that ranged from prog rock to proto-punk and new wave. They were most notably known for their singles 'Ships In The Night', 'Sister Seagull' and 'Maid In Heaven', and recorded their final album in 1978, with Bill Nelson's follow-up solo project 'Red Noise' as the intended sixth Be Bop Deluxe album, but due to Charles' visa expiring, rather than replace him, they called it a day.
