Album Review: Johannes Passion (St. John Passion) by Sofia Gubaidulina If you’re into classical music with a contemporary twist, Sofia Gubaidulina’s Johannes Passion is one of those albums that grabs your attention and doesn’t let go. Released in 2001 under the German label Hänssler Classic, this ambitious work brings together powerhouse performers like Valery Gergiev conducting the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra and Choir, alongside soloists Natalia Korneva, Viktor Lutsiuk, Fedor Mozhaev, and Genady Bezzubenkov. Add to that the hauntingly beautiful voices of St. Petersburger Kammerchor, and you’ve got an album that feels both sacred and raw. The standout tracks for me are “Das Wort” (The Word) and “Die Sieben Schalen Des Zorns” (The Seven Bowls of Wrath). In “Das Wort,” there’s this moment where the choir swells up so unexpectedly—it’s not just sound; it’s emotion pouring out. You can almost feel the weight of what Gubaidulina was trying to say about faith and doubt. It’s intense but also strangely comforting. Then comes “Die Sieben Schalen Des Zorns,” which hits hard with its relentless rhythms and piercing brass. The tension builds until you’re practically holding your breath. It’s apocalyptic without being over-the-top, if that makes sense. These two pieces stick with me because they balance beauty and unease perfectly—like staring at something massive and mysterious from afar. What really sets this album apart is how Gubaidulina uses contrasts. One moment you’re floating on ethereal strings, and the next, you’re hit with thunderous percussion. Her compositional style leans modern but never alienates listeners—it invites them deeper into her world. And props to Valery Gergiev here; his direction keeps everything cohesive even when things get wild. The vocal performances deserve special mention too. Natalia Korneva’s soprano cuts through like sunlight breaking clouds, while Fedor Mozhaev’s baritone grounds the heavier moments with gravitas. The production quality is top-notch thanks to engineer Karl Heinz Runde, though I have to admit, the liner notes could’ve been shorter! Credit goes to Dr. Miguel Carazo & Associates for translations, but flipping between English, French, and Spanish felt a bit much. Still, kudos to the design team for making the booklet visually striking with Fra Angelico’s artwork on the cover—it ties the spiritual theme together nicely. Here’s the thing about Johannes Passion: it’s not background music. This is the kind of album you sit down with, maybe dim the lights, and let it take over. There were times during my first listen when I thought, “Wow, this might be too heavy.” But then, as weird as it sounds, I found myself humming bits of “Hoffnung” (Hope) days later. That’s the magic of Gubaidulina’s music—it sneaks up on you. In the end, this album isn’t just another classical release. It’s a journey—one that asks big questions and leaves room for silence. If anything, listening to this made me realize how rare it is to encounter music that challenges you spiritually and emotionally. Oh, and fun fact? Every time I hear “Grablegung” (Burial), I think of old paintings of mourners. Maybe that’s just me, but hey, art sticks around in strange ways.

About Sofia Gubaidulina Natalia Korneva, Viktor Lutsiuk, Fedor Mozhaev, Genady Bezzubenkov, St Petersburger Kammerchor, Chor Und Orchester Des MariinskyTheaters St Petersburg, Valery Gergiev

Sofia Asgatovna Gubaidulina is a Soviet and Russian composer who has been living in Germany since 1991. Author of more than a hundred symphonic works, compositions for soloists, choir and orchestra, instrumental ensembles, music for theater, cinema and cartoons. Sofia Gubaidulina was born in Chistopol in the Tatar Republic of the Soviet Union in October 24, 1931. After instruction in piano and composition at the Kazan Conservatory, she studied composition with at the , pursuing graduate studies there under . Until 1992, she lived in Moscow. Since then, she has made her primary residence in Germany, outside Hamburg. Gubaidulina's compositional interests have been stimulated by the tactile exploration and improvisation with rare Russian, Caucasian, and Asian folk and ritual instruments collected by the "Astreia" ensemble, of which she was a co-founder, by the rapid absorption and personalization of contemporary Western musical techniques (a characteristic, too, of other Soviet composers of the post-Stalin generation including and ), and by a deep-rooted belief in the mystical properties of music. Her uncompromising dedication to a singular vision did not endear her to the Soviet musical establishment, but her music was championed in Russia by a number of devoted performers including , , , and . The determined advocacy of , dedicatee of Gubaidulina's masterly violin concerto, Offertorium , helped bring the composer to international attention in the early 1980s. Gubaidulina is the author of symphonic and choral works, two cello concerti, a viola concerto, four string quartets, a string trio, works for percussion ensemble, and many works for nonstandard instruments and distinctive combinations of instruments. Her scores frequently explore unconventional techniques of sound production. In 2011, with the personal patronage and participation of Sofia Gubaidulina in Kazan, the annual festival of contemporary music named after her "Concordia" was founded by the State Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of Tatarstan / , in which famous Russian and foreign composers and performers perform. The artistic director of the festival is Honored Artist of Russia Alexander Sladkovsky / .

Tabarnac! This is an amazing piece of music. The singers are singing as if they were present at the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Such amazing voices and such a collaborative effort by all the musicians. Truly stunning.

This is so haunting and terrifying, yet very sublime and amazing. It's like as Jesus is suffering and coming to his death, a wicked world full of evil and diseases is slowly unfolding and coming to it's end. The Golgota sequence is one of the most eerie, heavy and astonishing things I've ever heard. The chorus shouting and whispering "Khristos" all way through gave chills to my spine. Glórias a Deus e a seu Filho que está Vivo!

I am not mature enough for all works of Gubaildulina and cannot enjoy all of them but this belongs to a series of works of her which I listen repeatedly. It is a highly spiritual music.

Not caught in the 12-tone technique, a great song so a compelling melody and chords can also be convinced. Since the Russian but do not know exactly the progress, if the bus would be gospel historian? And tenor is Christ? Melody of the bus (gospel historian?) Is also as sutra chanting, it was also felt to resemble the melody of the Shostakovich Symphony No. 14 bus singer.

I love this woman and her music, everything I've heard from her so far has been thourally enjoyable, moving and interesting. From the interviews I've seen and read, she's also a beautiful person who has had her struggles, as many composers from that generation. But I'm very thankful to have her music to listen to!!

Amazing masterpiece which you would probably not listen to very often - like Bach's Passions. By the same token, it sheds a new light on Sofia Gubaidulina's other works. Although I am fairly familiar with her compositions, I will need to listen again to the "Sieben Wörte" (for Cello and Bayan: not for the faint-hearted) and to the "Meditation über einen Choral von Bach". If you enjoyed this Passion and if you do not know Gubaidulina's Chaconne for piano, I suggest that you listen to it (it is much easier music than the Passion): there are many good interpretations available on YouTube... Enjoy !
