When The Saints Go Marching In For My Good Fortune: A Soul-Stirring Ride with Mahalia Jackson Man, if you’ve never heard Mahalia Jackson belt it out like she does on When The Saints Go Marching In For My Good Fortune, you’re missing something real. This 1963 gem from the Netherlands—yeah, the Dutch put this one out—isn’t just another folk album; it’s a punch to the gut in all the right ways. Mahalia’s voice doesn’t just sing—it preaches, pleads, and lifts you up like Sunday morning sunlight streaming through stained glass. Let me tell ya about "When The Saints Go Marching In." That track alone is worth every penny of whatever you paid for this record (or maybe your grandpa did). It’s not just some jazzy tune or church choir staple here—it’s raw power. Mahalia takes that old spiritual and makes it hers, stretching each note like taffy until it feels alive. You can almost see her standing there at the mic, eyes closed, letting loose everything she’s got. By the time she hits those high notes, I swear my heart skips a beat. Like… how do you even do that? She doesn’t just march those saints in—she drags ‘em along behind her like a queen leading an army. And then there’s “For My Good Fortune.” Oh man, this one sneaks up on you. At first, it feels quieter, more reflective—but don’t let that fool ya. There’s a weight to it, like Mahalia’s whispering secrets straight into your soul. Her voice cracks in places, but instead of ruining it, it makes it feel human. Real. Like she’s lived every word she’s singing. I found myself humming this one days later, kinda haunted by how much truth she packs into such simple lyrics. You know what gets me? Listening to this album now feels almost surreal. Here’s Mahalia, dropping fire in 1963, while CBS over in Europe decided to press it up nice and clean. Back then, who woulda thought we’d still be talking about it decades later? But here we are. And honestly? If you listen close enough, you might start wondering if maybe she knew something we didn’t. Maybe she could hear the future coming. Anyway, give this one a spin when life feels heavy—or even when it doesn’t. Let Mahalia remind you why music matters. Just don’t blame me if you end up crying in your coffee afterward.
