Through The Fields Of Mourning: A Haunting Journey into Darkness Released in 2010 by US-based label Shadowgraph Records, Through The Fields Of Mourning is Welter In Thy Blood’s masterstroke—a raw and atmospheric blend of dark ambient textures and doom metal weight. If you’re into music that feels like wandering through an abandoned graveyard at midnight, this album will hit the spot. The record kicks off with “Casting Ashes To The Wind,” a track that immediately pulls you under its shadowy spell. It starts slow—almost too slow—but then layers of distorted guitars and haunting field recordings creep in, courtesy of Darea Plantin. The vocals from John Paul Whetzel are guttural yet oddly melodic, like he’s narrating some ancient curse. What sticks with me most is how the track builds tension without ever fully releasing it. By the time it fades out, you’re left feeling unsettled but strangely hooked, kinda like when you can’t look away from something terrible happening on TV. Another standout cut is “Enemy Of The Human Race.” This one leans harder into the doom metal side, with Eric Burns’ drumming hitting like distant thunder and Whetzel’s guitar work carving out riffs so heavy they could crush granite. But what really makes this track unforgettable is its pacing. Just as you think it’s about to explode into chaos, it retreats back into eerie ambience, keeping you guessing the whole way through. There’s also this weird noise element sprinkled throughout (thanks again to Plantin) that sounds like static from another dimension. You won’t hum these tunes while brushing your teeth, but they’ll definitely linger in the corners of your mind for days. Credit where it’s due—the production here is top-notch. Mastered by John Stillings, every note and growl has room to breathe, even amidst all the sonic gloom. And props to Kevin Yuen for the artwork; it perfectly matches the vibe of desolation and despair dripping from each track. Even the photography by Plantin adds to the overall sense of bleakness. What struck me most about Through The Fields Of Mourning isn’t just its heaviness—it’s the mood it creates. Listening to it feels less like entertainment and more like an experience, one you might not want to repeat often but won’t soon forget. It’s the kind of album that reminds you why people still bother with physical copies—it demands your full attention, preferably alone in a dimly lit room. So yeah, if you dig bands like Swans or early Godflesh, give this a spin. Just don’t blame me if you find yourself staring blankly at walls afterward. Oh, and fun fact? For such a grim-sounding project, their credits read almost like a DIY family affair. Makes me wonder if they argued over who got stuck doing the field recordings. Either way, respect.
