Review by Randolph Cardenas

The Vienna Of Johann Strauss by Karajan & Vienna Philharmonic: A Timeless Spin Through Romantic Classics If you’ve ever wondered what it would sound like if a waltz and a polka had a baby, then threw that baby into the hands of one of history’s greatest conductors, this 1959 album is your answer. The Vienna Of Johann Strauss—led by Herbert von Karajan with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra—is basically classical music's VIP lounge. It doesn’t just play; it struts, twirls, and occasionally trips over its own elegance (but in the most charming way possible). Let’s dive right in because I can already hear the opening bars calling my name. Track Highlights That’ll Stick With You 1. Tales From The Vienna Woods Oh man, where do I even start? This piece is like taking an afternoon stroll through some Austrian forest but without any pesky insects ruining your vibe. The strings are lush, the horns are bold, and there’s this sneaky little birdcall moment courtesy of the flute that feels so cheeky it almost made me laugh out loud. Like, bravo, Johann Strauss II—you absolute card! What makes this track unforgettable isn’t just how pretty it sounds—it’s how cinematic it feels. Close your eyes, and suddenly you’re not sitting at your desk anymore; you’re frolicking through alpine meadows while wearing lederhosen you definitely didn’t buy yourself. 2. Auf Der Jagd Polka Now here’s a banger for when you’re feeling adventurous—or maybe just caffeinated. Translating to "On the Hunt," this polka is as lively as trying to catch squirrels with your bare hands. Horns blare like they’re mimicking hunting calls, and the percussion gives off serious “we’re chasing something” energy. There’s a mischievousness to it that makes you want to grab a partner and spin them around the room until you both fall down laughing. Honestly, if this song were a person, it’d be that friend who drags you on wild escapades but somehow always gets away with it. Why This Album Still Slaps (Yes, I Said Slaps) Released under RCA Victor Red Seal back in ’59, this record proves why old-school recordings still hold their own against modern gimmicks. Karajan’s baton work is nothing short of wizardry—he knows exactly how to coax every ounce of drama and charm from these pieces. Meanwhile, the Vienna Philharmonic plays like they invented orchestral swagger. They don’t just perform Strauss’ compositions; they live them, breathe them, and probably dream about them too. And let’s give credit where it’s due: Strauss wrote tunes so catchy they could make even someone who thinks “classical music” means Mozart memes tap their toes. But hearing his works interpreted by Karajan adds layers upon layers of depth, turning each track into a mini-masterpiece. Final Thoughts… Or Maybe Just Random Musing? Listening to The Vienna Of Johann Strauss feels like stepping into another era—one where people actually dressed up to go hear live music instead of showing up in pajama pants and hoping no one notices. It’s romantic, thrilling, and occasionally ridiculous in all the best ways. If you’re looking for background noise while folding laundry, this ain’t it. But if you’re ready to lose yourself in swirling waltzes and high-energy polkas, prepare to have your socks knocked clean off. Also, fun fact: Apparently, Strauss once said he preferred champagne to water. And after listening to this album, I kinda get it. Cheers to that!

So far the performance of this work conducted by Karajan is concerned, I prefer the clean performance in the fifties to this one that sounds a little bit contaminated by tempo rubato.
