Bonnou Machine by Kenji Siratori: A Sonic Punch to the Ears (In a Good Way) Let’s cut straight to the chase—Kenji Siratori’s Bonnou Machine isn’t your grandma’s playlist unless she happens to be an avant-garde noise enthusiast with a thing for glitchy chaos. Released in 2007 under the UK-based label Kovorox Sound, this album is like sticking your head inside a blender that’s been programmed by robots who’ve just discovered punk rock. It’s electronic music on steroids—or maybe acid? Either way, it’s unforgettable. The album kicks off with “Bonnou Machine 01,” which feels like the auditory equivalent of being chased through a neon-lit cyberpunk alley by malfunctioning drones. The track starts slow enough to make you think, "Oh cool, I can handle this," but then BAM!—it explodes into layers of distorted bleeps and bloops that sound like they’re trying to communicate with extraterrestrials. By the time it ends, you're left wondering if your ears are bleeding or just really, really confused. Spoiler alert: both. Then there’s “Bonnou Machine 02,” which somehow manages to out-weird its predecessor. Imagine someone took all the leftover sounds from old Atari games, threw them into a washing machine set to spin cycle, and hit record. There’s a moment around the three-minute mark where everything drops out except for this eerie high-pitched tone that makes you feel like you’ve accidentally tuned into alien radio waves. Is it annoying? Sure. But also kind of brilliant? Absolutely. What sticks with me about these tracks isn’t just their sheer audacity—it’s how they refuse to let you zone out. You can’t exactly hum along to this stuff while folding laundry. No, Bonnou Machine demands your full attention, like that one friend at parties who won’t stop talking about conspiracy theories but is secretly hilarious. So yeah, Kenji Siratori didn’t create something “nice” here—he created something raw, messy, and unapologetically weird. And honestly? That’s what makes it so damn good. Listening to Bonnou Machine feels like stepping into another dimension where rules don’t exist, and frankly, we could all use more of that kind of unpredictability in our lives. Final thought: If aliens ever invade Earth and ask us to prove humanity’s artistic worth, I’d hand them this album. They’d either leave us alone forever or immediately declare war. Either way, we win.

About Kenji Siratori

Born March 13, 1975, in Chitose, Hokkaidō, Japan, Kenji Siratori is a cyberpunk author and Internet self-promoter. He first gained attention in 2006 by writing to as many industrial, ambient, EBM and goth bands he could find, including "reviews" of them in his idiosyncratic style, and asking to collaborate. His scattergun approach proved successful, despite his reviews of non-sequitirs and nonsensical cyberspeak being interchangeable, and a slew of collaborations from flattered musicians were soon foisted upon the world.
